I doubt that it is a felony. Most of the states require that to be over $1000. But yes it can be charged against you. If you really did drop the deposit it will show up in their accounting for the day. Deposits are checked against the cash received and it they don't match the log, in this case it would be an excess amount, then they could determine that it was a paperwork error and not a theft.

Even if you quit they still can charge you with it, your employment status has nothing to do with it. Quitting only makes you look more guilty. I would request an audit on all the drops made, if they are $479 over then that proves you dropped it without logging it. When it comes down to it you can request a polygraph.

In my area theft over $500 is a felony.
If you did not steal the money you shouldn't worry.
They have to prove the theft.
Make sure and find out if there is a camera, if so ask them to review the tape to prove you are innocent.
Do not talk to police if they question you. Detectives are only out to gather evidence. Ask for a lawyer, or tell them you will not talk without the presence of a lawyer because you do not want to incriminate yourself.
They have to prove you have committed a crime. Don't tell police anything. All you can hope to do by this is give a story that could be inconsistent, and that could be reason enough to suspicion you more, and further incriminate you.
Best of luck.

I agree with poster Mark A: something smells rotten about your statement. You know you dropped it yet you "forgot" to log it? Come on, give the money back and tell them you "forgot" to drop it instead. $479 is NOT worth losing your job, possibly being arrested, charged and having a record and losing your credibility and respect. Sorry, but just do the right thing and clear yourself and guilty conscious.

if you just out right quit, you look guilty.
if you are not guilty, consider this scenario.
Your boss must have seen the over sight on your submitted paper work that you did not log that deposit.
Yet it is your boss who tells you the deposit didn't make it to the bank. There must be a surveillance camera that can corroborate
whether you personally made that drop. It's a theme park. Cameras every where. Can they arrest you? Yes. Will it hold up?
Depends on the images the camera captured.

First of all I think a felony is over $2000, but either way the same thing happened to me and the bank was the one at fault , go to the bank yourself and ask them to look through the transactions that were posted to that account on that date. I wish you the very best.

Let's see, your deposit didn't make it to the drop AND it happens to be the one you "failed" to log?
Something here smells like a week old fish

Yup, they can call the coppers on ya, who will bring on detectives for an investigation, who decide if there is probable cause for an arrest...
Banks have cameras recording everything nowadays. If you indeed dropped it, ask to have their security confirm it. Otherwise, your employer can make you cough up the money
