A friend of mine says that Jesus was Jewish, but this doesn't make sense. Had he been Jewish, wouldn't he have been named Jesus Jew, instead of Jesus Christ?

Christ means annointed.

He was a jew. Christians are followers of him and so his diciples were the first christians, even though they were jews as well.

The christian church didn't come into existence until about 300AD.

The word christian comes from Christ and means "like Christ" or "little Christ". Jesus was indeed a Jew as that was his heritage and how he was raised. Being a Jew wasn't because of His religion, and didn't mean that He had to agree with the other Jews form of religion.. He was a Jew by birth. That's like saying a black person isn't a black person because they are baptist or catholic. Doesn't make sense.

Jesus was born in the flesh as a Jew. He started the Christian faith, so He is both, but then again He is God, so He is not Jewish anymore. The word Christ simply means "an annointed one", and if you trace that back into the OT you will see that He is annointed as the King of the Jews.

You have your answer clearly from previous posts. He was Born into Jewish nation and was a Jew by religion too.

I would like a Muslim to clarify why Jesus is a Muslim. Isn't it because He submitted to G-d's will? Maybe I am ignorant, but He couldn't have been Muhammedan since He preceded Muhammad.

Jesus was 100% Jewish.

Jesus was killed by the local politicians for being a liberal Jew.

Jesus Christ even taught at the Jewish Jerusalem University known as the Temple of Jerusalem.

Jesus was a Jew. He was born in Bethlehem in Israel, circumcised in Jerusalem, Israel, raised in Nazareth, Galilee, of Israel. He was Jewish. He grew up with the Torah, and it says in Matthew 5:18-19 that He did not come to do away with the law but to fulfill it. The next three chapters speak of fulfilling the heart of the law rather than the letter of the law, which is what God always wanted, but the point is that He was Jewish not only in terms of geographic location, but in His very life.

His name is "Jesus" (God saves). "Christ" is a title, the Greek version of the Hebrew word "Messiah". It means "Anointed One". Jesus Christ is God, but is also Man, THE MAN, who came down to save us.

The term "Christian" was first used in Antioch after Jesus' death. It was meant as a slam against those who follow Jesus Christ. Instead of just saying they are disciples or followers of Jesus, the slam was that we are "slaves" of Christ. It stuck because in a way, though not in a derogatory way, it is true. In Biblical times, there was a tradition in which the slave of a master, who loved the master so much that he was practically family, could choose to stay with the master for life. An earring would be placed in his left ear, and that would mark him as a "volunteer slave" of sorts. In this way, we are volunteer slaves of Christ, as one who love Him so much, we want to be part of His family. Those opposed to Christians, who were slamming Christians, did not understand this Hebrew (Jewish) tradition, and meant it as a slam.

But, Jesus was not called "Christ" because we are "Christians", He was called "Christ" anyway -- we are just called Christians because of HIS title.

Timothy Monkeyballs? (your user name)

Wow, that is one for the ages.

Christ a Jew -- I don't know, nor do I care. He was a guy that did a lot of great things, maybe, and he was immaculately conceived, unlikely, then was tacked up on a cross, maybe, and then came back to life and made history, and pigs fly.

All I remember is the game of telephone when I was a child, then look at the bible and shake my head that how in the world people can put so much faith in it. For Christ sake, its a couple of thousand years old, wasn't even written down for generations, then its been revised up the kiester, translated, taken apart and rewritten and yet people are putting all their beliefs in it?

WT hay?

My religion, the golden rule, the basic tenet of all religions. That can not be argued or changed. It is basic and as simple as it gets.

I wish people would understand the above. Life would be so much easier if we did. Instead, as Confucius said, “Life is really simple, but we insist on making it complicated.”

Peace

Jim
