well mr bout apparently you have never spent any time in the military because even though it is not a flak jacket the body armor we are issued is "refered" to as THE "FLAK"

Don't. Dragonskin armor was tested and it failed. Do not believe the marketing hype.

You are better off wearing the issued body armor. If you have good NCOs - they will order you not to wear the Dragonskin anyway.

Shut up. Sit down and listen to your NCOs.

Dragon Skin Armor

First: Any idiot can tell you what they think. Never blindly take advice from a man that doesn't have to suffer the consequences of your decision. You will NOT lost SGLI http://benefits.va.gov/INSURANCE/sgli_myths_rumors.asp as per their website.

Second, dragon skin isn't perfect, but it does allow multiple hits and a soldier can muscle through it. I know because my buddy (marine scout) got hit in the side plate. He was bruised deeply, and I mean deeply, but managed to fight his way out. My gear is standard issue and I wish I had the money and connections to get dragon skin.

Next, talk with your command. They shouldn't have a problem with you upgrading your gear. The uniformity thing is great in garrison, but down range not wearing better armor because Peter and Mary can't get their hands on it is dumb. Upgrade if you can.

Last, what is your MOS? If you're a cook, save your 4-35K and be vigilant. If you're 11B then perhaps you can have a better chance of coming home. Then again, your question was asked 6 years ago, so who knows what you did. For those going downrange now, do what you have to do to protect yourselves.

The Army says that dragon skin failed testing...
Hell if I always listened to what the army told me I would be running around in my boxers...
Even the Ex-Marine who invented our now in use Interceptor vest admits that Dragon Skin is the better body armor available.
Qoute - "If they told me today that I was going to Iraq tomorrow and they asked me do you want an interceptor or dragon skin vest, I'd take the dragon skin"....
This coming from a marine!!!

So much for the whole discussion on what body armor is better..

Dragon skin armor was tested and it passed with flying colours, however, as appropriate big-wigs don't hold the patents to the product, they insisted it failed in the trials.

You can go on youtube and watch them put a few magazines of various rifle and handgun ammunition into one vest and it doesn't penetrate through to the dummy.

It's all about the money. Don't necessarily listen to your NCOs. They might be idiots. Think for yourself and do your own research.

However, if you do get killed and you're not wearing the issued equipment, your insurance won't pay out. This is why NCOs tell you to not wear it. An IED doesn't care about the type of body armor.

Though Dragon Skin looks like it is pretty good stuff the area in which it failed in was long exposure to heat. Testing by the DoD has shown that Dragon Skin will fail when used in extended periods of time in high temps, therefore the army at least has banned the use of Dragon Skin by soldiers. It would still be pretty good for law enforcement though. Also the issued IBA is plenty good enough protection especially when used with SAPI plates.

Chris Kyle stated in his book, American Sniper, that Dragon Skin was hands down the best body armor. If I would listen to anyone, it would be him. He also left his P226 for a Springfield Operator and then on to a P220. If it's good enough for Chris Kyle, I'll take it. That guy was one of the most battle tested snipers in history. You should be able to buy it direct from the manufacturer with the appropriate paperwork.

should be an option for a solder to where the armor they have confidence in saving there life without court-martial or even threatened for using it

in-spite of these threats on them plenty of them still took dragonskin to the battle field many of which attribute to saving there lives, as well as there families sending them the armor, apparently there families cared more
about there loved ones coming home then the threats of no insurance paid out in case of there death ;)
I might not know any better but I would call it field tested, it was just tested by privet party on there personal preference and choice
