Does a jig have to have a trailer on it to be effective? Or does it not have to have a trailer on it?

Thank You

jigs can be fish either w/ or w/o but when i use a trailer i found it to be more effective, if using a trailer it is a good idea to use a corresponding color that is close to the color(s) of the jig. Best of luck to you and catch a big one.

A jig doesn't "need" a trailer. But it certainly helps to make the jig look more "natural" if you are fishing it like a crayfish.
We use jigs all the time in the spring for walleye with no trailer or live bait at all. Just a hair jig worked by bouncing the bottom. (or "jigging") But at that time the fish are VERY aggressive so no subtle tactics are needed. When we start fishing for smallies we generally (if using a jig) will use a trailer to make the jig look more like a crayfish.

Jigs work fine without a trailer, but they produce more strikes and bigger fish with one. I won't fish a jig without a Zoom Swimming Chunk trailer.

I very rarely use a trailer just a straight jig and that's it

"Three opinions be a charm" (oops, now it be four opinions) ~ nope. However I'll use what are known as Egg Sucking Leech's for Steelhead that has a trailer (soft plastic tail) and they definitely get attention! So ta' reiterate ~ nope they don't need em', butttt at times with one they'll find the mark even better. "Fish On" ;)...

When it's not productive one way, try the other.
The simple answer to your question is no, a trailer is not necessary.
