I think what is forbidden is drinking to excess, some groups just take it to the extreme.

The first answerer, johnnybarson as well as Jesus M, have no clue what they are talking about. When the uneducated speak in a way acting like they know the answer, they do far more harm then good. They also make themselves look like a fool.

The Jewish and Christian religions do NOT forbid drinking alcohol. The bible says it is OK in moderation. Heck, Jesus was a Jew and he did make wine from water at that wedding celebration.

Mormons forbid alcohol, so does the Islamic faith.

It's mostly a US cultural thing. European denominations don't have this hang up. Water into wine (yep, hard to argue with that). It wasn't grape juice. It wasn't as strong as our wine was (1/3 to 1/8 th) but drink enough of it and you would get drunk. In the section you cite: No culture without a wine hangup would interpret: Most people serve the good wine first, and then later serve the bad wine (why because after a point you can't tell as well) as grape juice.

It's control! It's also a form of taxes for the state! Forbid it, yet tax it. Makes so much "nonsense" when you really think about it. H-m-m-m-m

Jesus didn't set up a religion. His basic teaching was Do Unto Others as You would Have Them Do Unto You.

Unless a church was formed, the control couldn't be exercised and where would the power mongers be without that. Religion was invented to force the control on the people. One person above his neighbor. Definitely not Do Unto Others, but then the leaders of religions didn't really care about that, did they?

My, my, my, what have they done to us? Sensible people leave religions!!

Hi there,

The "wine" that they referred to, is not fomented. It is like our grape juice.

The Lord clearly say:

Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire... And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit... Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them... the place... was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit... And do not be drunk with wine... but be filled with the Spirit. (Acts 2:3-4; 4:8, 31; Ephesians 5:18)

I personally think that this is a personal question that each one will have to answer and give account of.

I don't know where the scripture is that says ...... don't let your freedom caused any of these little once to stumble it will be better for you if ......... and be thrown in the see...."

I don't know the exact words if somebody can help me out here.

What I am saying you have a relationship with the Lord, and He and He alone can convict you in your heart.

Take Care

Mormons can not get on addictions which includes drinking and smoking. The part that Jesus drank means to them that he sinned and is not perfect.
(Jesus obviously did drink but was never drunk. Jesus also ate fish which means that fish can be eaten by the rest of us I think. He didn't eat other animals though.)
There is a limit to the amount you can drink in any religion, but few mind drinking in general. Hope_It_Helps

In Islam alcohol is forbidden because:

"Shaitan (Satan) only wants to excite enmity and hatred between you with intoxicants (alcoholic drinks) and gambling, and hinder you from the remembrance of Allah and from As- Salat (the prayer). So, will you not abstain?" 5:91

In this verse of the Qur'an Allah tells us why alcohol is forbidden in Islam. And as you can see people who drink alcohol end up in fights and a lots of other bad things happen.
And some people get so drunk that they don't even know what is going on.

@ Former Muslimah May Allah guide you back to the straight path.

May Allah guide us and forgive us all . . . Ameen.

I hope I helped you to understand why alcohol is forbidden in Islam.

The bible prohibits drinking of liquor because it will destroy your health and God do not want that your body or health will not be destroyed. What Jesus made was not a wine that could destroy the health of man but a first class wine where no man will get drunk. It is just a smell of winbe but nobody will get drunk of it.

I thought it was just the Muslims that forbid alcohol, though I have read that some do drink, so that is a little puzzling.
