Like others have said, it completely depends on the breed, age, and personality of your dog.

An adult chihuahua maybe happy with tossing a toy inside for a few minutes and then running around the living room chasing it. They may never need or enjoy going on long walks around the neighborhood.

I have an 8 month old lab who has to burn off energy every day or she goes nuts being stuck in the house. Okay, not nuts, but you can defitely tell she is bored. She paces around, won't lie down, and in general wants to play the inside/outside game. Everyday, I try to give her at least 1.5 hours of outside activity. Our typical workout includes going to the lake with her favorite retreiving toy. Depending on the weather, she will swim and chase the toy for about half an hour. We will then walk around the lake (3.2 miles). Typically we stop at least once during the walk to play fetch and then again at the end. I try to let her off the leash when on our walks because she can run around more and burn off energy.

We also typically play about half an hour to an hour of fetch in the backyard (in 15 minute encrements) everyday, and we play fetch and wrestle in the house for about half an hour. Also, she enjoys chewing on Kongs and doing trick training to exercise her mind.

When we do this everyday, not only do I get a descent walk in, my labbie is content to sleep the rest of the day away.

As the other posters said, it depends entirely upon the breed. I have two, high energy young Terriers that I walk about 3-4 miles in the a.m., I'm retired now so I can walk them at noon, and early p.m. 1-2 miles. When I worked I had a dog walker for the noon walk.

depends on what type of dog you have....a low energy dog such as a german shepherd would be happy with playing catch for half an hour and a walk around the block. a dog like a terrier may need to go out for an hour long run and play some tug of war.

Depends on the breed you have age and of all health of your dog, but assume it is health and average size a fairly good rule of thumb is 30 minutes exercise a day unless it is adapted to more with your life stlye (ie runner walker etc..)
