I am so afraid of falling-my husband laughs because I´m only 5´2" and probably wouldn´t break anything, but I´m still scared!

Probably not, but the real issue is making sure your bindings are set properly, so your skis release and don't twist your legs! You should get them checked once a year. Remember also that if your clothes are layered properly, they will help absorb some of the initial impact.

And finally, RELAX! If you think you're going to fall, you probably will. Loosen up! Go over to the easy slopes and practice till your comfortable or take a lesson. Do some balance exercises to improve your chances and build your confidence. There's nothing worse than skiing afraid.

That's probably the best course of action. The chances of breaking a leg are slim. In all actuality, your chances are higher of tearing your ACL nowadays. But that happening is also slim.

Depending on how hard you impact when sitting down will determine what other damage you will do. My guess, is if you have to sit down to avoid falling, you are a novice skier. So you probably won't be moving all that fast. Injuries result more at high speed.

I tell you what I tell all of my students and clients. If you think you are going to fall (or are falling/sitting on purpose) RELAX. When your muscles are relaxed the chance of you hurting yourself more than a few briuses goes way down. When you try to fight the fall is when you do damage because your muscles are tight.

When I think I'm gonna fall....I just let it happen. I've walked away from some glorious yard sales with nothing more than a bruised ego.

Have Fun!

Take a lesson....don't go around just "sitting down" whenever you "think" you're gonna fall, you'll end up hurting yourself and probably someone else. Just take a lesson, please...

Falling is just a part of learning to ski, you gotta accept that. But for the love of god, get a lesson.

Besides, what's the point in even skiing if you're just gonna keep sitting down everytime you get scared? If you're gonna do that you might as well never leave the lodge.

No, I think that is a good maneuver. The problem I have though is trying to get up without having to take my skis off.

It all depends on the size of your butt and the strength of the person's leg on whom you sit.
