It almost certainly is. Even bottled commercial water can be contaminated. Boil water and freeze it, if possible. I believe a few drops of Iodine will make water safe.

After traveling to many places around the world I can tell you dirty water countries' reputation usually precedes your visit. In other words if you hear that the water is dirty it probably is,and you will pay the price if you drink it: diarrhea, vomiting and gastric disorders. Stick to bottled water, and try not to buy local bottled water . Buy some name brand you have heard of. No, sorry you can not tell by looking at it unless it is really contaminated.

If water smells badly and is not clear then these are obvious critical signs, however, most infections in warm climates come from bacteria in unclean water that looks clear and clean.
If you go to a country where you have doubts about tap water, always boil the water. That would at least kill bacterial contamination. Otherwise get bottled water from a reputable source.

the best is to use lifestraw, which filters dirt and bacteria from water once you drink it. it can be about $2.

to know if the water you're drinking is dirty, it maybe a little bit brownish in colour and sometimes even chalky. but sometimes a water which is clear can be full of bacteria too. the best is to filter bacteria in the water without adding minerals, and chemicals, etc. that will help alot.

in England the tap water contains traces of matter tht in one year, if you drink 1 litre per day, amounts to 1 kg of substance that causes ecoli infection, which needs isolation in hospital & is v unpleasant. . boil water if u not sure. or buy mineral water. do not risk impure water for your body.

No, you can't. It can look okay, and be swarming with bacteria. Remember the cholera in London in 1854? Here's a link:
