Al-Qiyamah, for the sake of Allah s.w.t. you have to make your choice. No matter how hard it be to drop those traditions, you must do it let the whole world stand against you.
Respect your parents but there is no obedience to creation in disobedience to the Creator.
At least you realise that some traditions are unislamic. Most of the people never realise it, some even think they are part of Islam!

I always tried to ask myself this question. In the beginning when my parents were still in the Days of Jaahilliyah, yes we just followed culture, even though it wasn't as bad as what i see today. little by little my parents started to get the picture, and understand that what they were doing were wrong (even though my dad is a convert, and has no bidd'ah culture, still muslims do tend to tell u the wrong info when u convert).
Before u knew it, my mom was wearing full hijab with abayah, my dad grew a full beard, started to roll his pants up over his ankles, and wear thobes and islamic dress.
by the time grew up, there was no more culture except the culture of Islam, subhanallah, masha-Allah..i now wear niqaab, and my mom and sister followed. we try to stay away from bidd'ah as much as possible....
but just because i see my parents as great role-models, doesn;t stop me from seeking knowledge of my Deen; i had to find out if what we were doing was right, and what we can do to correbt ourselves if we were wrong.
insha-Allah i am now studying the Arabic language, and Qur'anic sciences, i am half arab, but still need to understand the language properly.
i ask Allah that all Muslims out there are Muslim for the right intentions, and are staying away from bid'ah as much as possible, and that they all go back to the Qur'an and Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah(s.a.w)

Alhamdulillah my parents' traditions are Islam. My mother is an Uzbek and my father an Iraqi from Al-Tamim tribe so the thing they have in common is Islam. My father sometimes does funny things, like going to Turkish mosque, which I wouldn't do because their creed is weak and they are Sufis, but alhamdulillah he never forced that on me. I do wish sometime that his Islam was better. My mother never leaves the house, I think that is very good and she is a noble woman. my parents also allow me freedom to choose my own spouse and to pick my friends. they know I won't do anything unislamic.
But most of my friends are Muslims and their parents often do non-Islamic stuff or sometimes things that are against Islam. Sometimes they do Islam but they don't follow it properly. 99% of "Muslims" follow culture, only a few actually follow the religion, that's my humble opinion. At the end Allah Ta'ala will judge them and us.
I was brought up as a Muslim but I feel the need to upgrade my religion.

Alhamdullillaah I'm happy to say that my parents tradition is 100% it wasn't always like that but Allaah opened my mom's heart to islam. My mom is the best muslimah I know of.
May Allaah reward her for all the hardships she endured to raise 11 orphaned children. She did a great job. She will have her place in paradise where she will finally rest and put her feet up:) InshaAllaah.
Allahumaghfirwali walidaya warhamhumaa kama rabayaani saqheera.

Allhamdullilah
I am following islam because i want to and i know its the truth although my parents were muslims aswell
But if the parents are good practising muslims then they would teach you why they have chosen the religion. but unfortunatley most muslims these days are by name and parents do alot of badthings themselves they only take it serious in ramadhan etc
WHY DONT THEY REALISE IT IS NOT JUST PRAY THEN DO WHAT YOU LIKE BUT IT IS A PEACEFUL WAY OF LIFE

Assalamalikum,
I try to follow Islam InshaAllah.
The best way to achieve this is to question yourself, if this/certain act has been mentioned in the Quran and Sunnah. If it is then do it with the knowledge and for the sake of Allah. If not then try to stay away from it.
May Allah give us all knowledge/understanding of our deen and May Allah benefit us from the knowledge, and May Allah bring as closer to the deen.
Ameen!

I follow Islam. My parents are also Muslim, and raised their children to understand the teachings of the religion. If I ever notice anything un-Islamic, I definitely know to question it and find out the correct /Islamic way...
