I am from Scotland and sadly like most folks of my generation can only speak English .
It is embarrassing when you come across people from many other countries who as well as there own language can speak English fluently and probably 2 or 3 other languages as well
The younger element of our society seem to be more keyed up on this important area m and admittedly they get more opportunity to expose themselves to other cultures through school trips and foreign holidays . But we should still be doing more to learn other languages and not just expect others to speak English to us.
Good Question I thought., will be interested to see what the response is.
PS
Surprisingly I can still remember a bit of the French I was taught many years ago , but it seemed such a waste of time back then

I'm an Indian living in India and I obviously know and speak English. I'm learning French, though I can't really speak French, and I'm not that great at it.
I know Hindi ( national language of India ) and can sort of understan spoken Punjabi ( another Indian language, regional) if it's not spoken too fast. It's written form is like a maze though! I also understand some amount of Marathi. ( It's written form is pretty much the same as Hindi's.)
My parents are Punjabis and I live in Maharashtra.
NOTE: Indian languages do have written forms. In fact, there are only a few of them that don't. Though there are many dialects that don't really have any alphabet.

I am from Zimbabwe. I live in England. I can speak English, Shona and French. English is the language I think in. Shona is my 'mother tongue' but I speak it like a foreigner. I studied french till A level. I also studied Latin at school but I have forgotten it. I can understand a bit of Dutch and Italian and can get by as a tourist there speaking the local language.
