at my church the preacher gets a very small salary and he is bivocational [has a regular job as well]. The pianist, song director, treasurer, etc. are volunteers. We pay monthly utility bills for the building as does everyone. We pay to have the grass mowed because of the huge graveyard. We buy Vacation Bible School supplies each summer. We buy Sunday School books, crayons and paper. We give more than 10% to the needy. We help repair cars, buy medicines, anything that is seen as a need for any person. We give a certain amount to U.S. Missionaries, and an amount to foreign Missionaries. We buy Sunday School books which change up every quarter year. We need lightbulbs, batteries, paint, cleaning products, a vacuum cleaner, maintenance, we give away money to anyone who's lost their home to fire. We gave to 911. We gave to Katrina. We give money to special needs children. We have an 'adopted' elderly man for whom we supply diapers and an occasional teddy bear and goodies. of course that's not all. Much, much more.

Churches do require money to operate. The buildings need maintenance and there are bills to be paid such as utilities. Most churches have outreach programs of some nature which can include anything from ministering to people within the community to overseas missions trips. We have a missions team that goes outside the U.S. twice a year. Our church also sponsors a food bank which is open to people in the community who are in need. Some of the ministries within our church include Kids In Action (children's ministry), Youth Group, Women's Ministry, Men's Ministry, Sunday School, Celebrate Recovery (a 12 step program), Prayer Chain, all of which require time, effort and money to run at some level. Most of the people who run them operate on a volunteer basis, however the Pastor is on salary. Each of these ministries maintains a budget that is submitted to the church board. Teaching people requires materials such as books or study guides which the church usually covers the cost of initially and then turns to request donations from the users to restore the funds for future use. This is not an exhaustive list either. The best way to understand all the costs involved in running a church is to participate in planning activities with any kind of non-profit organization. I worked as a book keeper for the Union Gospel Mission in our community for a year, during which time I was responsible for the Paid Outs (paying of bills), it opened my eyes to the cost involved in just maintaining the building regulary.

Well, they have bills to pay, just like any other business or organization. They have to pay the utilities, maintaince, preachers do make a set salary, as do other employees of the church (such as an assistant to the preacher, youth director, etc) all of these people need to get paid. The money also goes to improvements on the church itself, as well as outreach programs to the community (if that particular congregation does them). There's a great deal of things that a church actually needs to have money for. Granted, some churches (like Anchorage Baptist Temple, better known as Prevo's Palace) don't use the money for such things and use it only to line the pockets of their ministers....which is a load of sh*t if you ask me.

they pay the utilities, pay the staff, fund missions, feed the poor, treat the sick, etc, etc.

my church prints a balance of the money taken up in collections the previous week, and shows what was done with every penny. twice a year they send out more in-depth reports to all the members, and those reports are also available upon request. most churches do something similar. if yours refuses to show you records like this, don't give them a dime. find a new church that will.

Many Diocese in the USA are almost bankrupt due to the high legal cost of all the pedophile priest victims law suits so they are in need of millions of dollars.
Other churches need the money to finance the high cost of living of their evangelist. They need big SUV, swimming pools, huge mansions etc...
Some evangelist are trying innovative ways to teach the Gospel that can be expensive too, like Ted Haggard using meth and male hookers. So keep the money flowing dear, it's needed.

The churches I've gone to have used the money to help the community and the world. Shoebox projects and buying food for kids in Africa, that sort of thing. Some of it is also used to keep the church running so it can continue to function and participate in those things. Most churches are very upfront with their finances when asked, even showing the complete records. I wouldn't want to attend a church that didn't do that.

In theory, they are spending it to further the work of the Lord...and they should be, helping people, etc...sadly, that is not what happens...look at some of the big name people like Benny Hinn and his group...He stays in hotel rooms that are valued at over 10000 per night on the money he receives...

It really is sad...

If you are not sending money, what business is it of yours? The world is full of nosy folk who just want to complain about the system. No one is twisting your arm making you send them money. You are a lonely person who only has misery to keep company.
