They're alright, but there is better. For a good, out of the box accurate rifle, take a peek at Savages. Remington 700s are a common favorite. The highest quality rifle you'd normally find, though, is the FN rifles. They're built on new production pre-64 style actions, heavy, free floating barrels, and are more or less the best consumer level bolt action rifle, but are heavy, and not a good idea for hunting. If you're not going to carry it too far, then it's a great rifle, but pretty expensive. It's not really a pretty rifle, though. Weatherby makes pretty good hunting rifles, and they've gotten very good accuracy out of featherlight barrels, which result in a very lightweight rifle.

RE:
Are browning bolt action rifles good quality or is there better?

I am not familiar with the FN (though I am now intrigued).
The Browning is more of an heirloom purchase. It has nice lines, good fit and finish. Browning gives more thought to the appearance of their rifles.

A remington 700 is going to shoot better. The difference is not going to be huge but you pay less for more accuracy.

Accuracy is not everything. I don't want to own an ugly gun. As I have hunted more I have found out that a light weight gun might not be as accurate but it is easier to shoot and so you end up getting more game.

At this point in time the best guns are customs but they are pricey.

If you like the Browning then go for it, there's nothing actually wrong with them, just personal choice really. Most big name modern rifles are at least as good as the folks shooting them. Personally the Browning is not my first choice, but that's just personal taste.

Surely FN only make tactical rifles? See the link below. If they are making sporting rifles I'm interested.

Weatherby are the only company I know that's guaranteeing sub MOA accuracy, though I know from personal experience that Savage achieve it.

My current choice is Kimber, I have not liked the Remingtons I looked at.

Sako, Tikka, Remington, Savage, Ruger.

I would buy a H & R Handie Rifle before I would buy a Browning. You are paying $300 more than a remington because it says Browning on it.

They were top of the line when they were made in Europe.

Buy American support your country first.

Well as far as quality goes, there is very few companies that are better.

As far as value goes, I think you can get something close for a couple hundred dollars less.

In all likelyhood, the A-bolt won't be the most accurate of 5 or 6 brands. It will fall somewhere in the middle.

They are okay for a japanese mfg rifle. An american made mossberg costs a portion of the price and does a better job. Best bolt action world wide ever made is the BRNO 98/29 Mauser bolt action; just like the fit on a swiss bank vault door. I think the best made american bolt action ever is the Enfield 1917 P-17; it is smooth as silk and without equal.

The fact is Browning is still a well built and refined product. So is the Ruger, Weatherby, CZ-USA, Remington and Kimber.
I've tested all the above and for accuracy. Kimber, Weatherby and Ruger tied. Remington was last place and has the heaviest trigger pull.
The Savage is also very accurate but not as refined so I place Savage in a lower class.

I use Sako and Weatherby bolt-action rifles for most hunting. I think they are best, otherwise I would use other brands.
