Edit:
The english have been calling it a bum since the mid 1300s. (check dictionary com). The american definition of bum as a tramp only started in the mid 1800s.

Maybe because when you are sitting, it IS the "bottom" of you! ( I actually have no idea....interesting question in a way!)

By the same token, why would anyone call a part of them a "bum"? A bum is a person who's a deadbeat.

Nonethless, I suspect "bum" is just a shortened version of "bottom."
I looked up buttocks... it's from near 1300, also.

This is interesting. As interesting as someone calling it a bum when most of us think a bum is someone who begs instead of works.

it's a cultural thing. We don't say bum where I live. We say bottom because it's at the bottom of where we sit down.

Because when you sit it is underneath you.... on the bottom of (most) of you.
