Trevithick indeed made the first steam locomotive. it was not, however, a 'road car' as the first answer suggests, but a locomotive specifically designed to run on rails for the Pen-y-Darren tramway in Wales. The idea that it was based on a road car appears to come from the site inventors.about.com. it is true that he did first build an unsuccessful road car powered by steam. More information, including a drawing of the loco can be found at http://www.cottontimes.co.uk/trevithicko.htm. A replica of this loco has been built and was exhibited at the National Railway Museum York during the celebrations marking the 200th anniversary of its construction

Richard Trevithick, a Cornish engineer, built a locomotive for hauling coal wagons to the Glamorgan canal at Abercynon in South Wales along the Pen-y-Darren tramway. The site is remembered by the street name 'Incline Top' in the town.
