The constant pressure from the President, the press, and immigration lobbying groups has finally forced the Senate to make some minor progress on the immigration . Though some of the prospects look promising it is important to keep one thing in mind: nothing is definite until it is signed into law. For now, the only thing that we know for sure is that the Senate is determined to build a giant wall along the border between the United States and Mexico. I’m not sure what this is supposed to accomplish though. Right now the border is a venerable death trap as it is with a survival rate so low that you would think it would be enough to deter most people from trying to sneak across the border. So why build a wall? Between the harsh reality of the unforgiving desert, the armed guards, and the untold other dangers that lie on the path between the United States and Mexico, if so many people are willing to face these dangers now, I am a little skeptical about the efficacy of a big wall

Only 5000 people managed to cross the Berlin wall illegally in 20 years. The current wall in Israel is showing to be working as well with the numbers of people able to cross the segregation zones down. A wall can work if done properly.
wrathofk - the Great wall of China didn't work because the raiders simply went round it, the same problem with the Maginot Line during WW2.

Did you see the deal on the news where the guy came across on an elephant. The Rio is only about six inches deep and if they can bring an elephant over (he was an America and just testing), right by the bridge going into the American city. The bad area is in the desert and they put out water now, but maybe a fence with go down some and come in an area marked in green that is safe will be better. Take care. By the way they didn't catch the guy on the elephant even with all the news media people filming it.

Well, you forgot to add the American Citizens to the list of those putting pressure on the government. Three times the ridiculous Dream Act came up for a vote and three times it was the faxes, emails and phone calls of the American People who literally shut down their switchboard. Having said that, evidently the desert isn't formidable enough because there are an estimated 38 million of them here so if what you say is true there must be hundreds of millions of them dead in the desert and Mexico must be deserted except their government and the drug cartels.
If you don't think a wall isn't effective just asked Duncan Hunter how much crime went down in the area where he worked to get the wall built. It is only common sense that a sufficient wall would keep people out but the wall would also need to be monitored by agents and using modern technology utilizing sensors etc.

I think there must be some indicator of the border line, where the Rio Grande isn't....a wall...we can't even keep our bridges together, such a feat of infrastructure is possible but for it's purpose: one gap will comprimise it....it's not just a wall we would have to build, but it would constantly have to be maintained and monitored...the question is: is the whole idea worth the huge amount of money? I think we should have desert outposts every 5-10 miles with border patrol and use survailance disguised as desert ambience like cacti, owls, cockroaches, bushes, rabbits etc like that have around Area 51.

Safer (or at least a little more stable and manageable) because I don't set up boundaries I can't cross, just enough to regulate my life. I've seen too much neurotic damage in others to want to live it myself; people who give up on everything and just shut it all out instead of making better choices at sorting things out. It's hard to do, but learning to stand your ground and say 'no' is the only way to get through.

A wall is just a waste of our time and money. What we need is a mine field just inside our border--on our side --and to let them know that if they cross it they could be blown up.Our border patrol is not working because the soldiers there are not allowed to detain them and all they can do is report how many are crossing. The only thing that does is tells us how many millions of them are here

As for armed guards, the only ones I know about are the two that shot a dope smuggler and they are the ones in jail. The people in power in Washington don't want to prevent the illegals from coming in.

If the USA wants to be considered in the same club as East-Germany, Israel and China, let them go ahead.
How many kilometers (I mean, miles) are there to be built again? Okay, let´s get to work, guys. "Foru" has the right idea - hire Mexicans to build it. This will help their economy anyway, then they don´t need to climb over it in the first place!!!!

Where would all this end? We've got 37 states that are have open coastal access or borders on Canada and Mexico. How would it be possible to really expect a simple fence to solve the 'problem'? A 'fence' is just a "theory" put forth by those that still beleive in a flat Earth!

lol i just have to laugh at all this simply because does anybody honestly think that building a wall is gonna do a damn thing seriously borders have no purpose in this day in age any more and people just need to understand that you build a wall they get a boat you make harbor patrols and whatever els they fly over with fake passports and Id's you get sky marshells or what not then they simply tunnel there is always a way its a constant cycle alot of people wont agree with any of that but hey thats just my little 2 cents
