It all depends on your budget, how seriously you're into photography, and how good you are with gadgets. Consumer Reports, in their November 2007 issue, give these Quick Picks:

Compact Cameras: Canon Powershot A710 IS, $270; Canon Powershot A630 (a "Best Buy"), $200; Fujifilm Finepix F31fd, $220 (a "Best Buy").

Pocket Cameras: Sony Cybershot DSC-N2, $310; Sony Cybershot DSC-W80, $250; Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX30, $350; Canon PowerShot SD800IS, $310; Samsung L77, $250 (a "Best Buy").

If you want a longer zoom than the usual, go for: Canon Powershot S3 IS, $290, the Olympus SP-510 UZ, $240, or Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ3, $350.

Panasonic has the best record for reliability (i.e., fewest repairs). Pentax and Vivitar have the worst, among the "point and shoot" cameras.

I'm gonna buy a camera, too. I'm thinking of Olympus FE 240 which is 7.1 mega pixels and has 5x optical zoom, 2.5" LCD, etc. The only thing is that it doesn't have any manual settings and it's a bit slow, but the price is really good; something around $200. I haven't been able to find any other cameras with 5x zoom in this price.

I recommend Sony Cybershot cameras... Whatever camera u buy, never get a one that has less than 7 megapixel...
