I live in Bakersfield. We like it here. We do get hot in the summer (not uncommon to hit over 100) and cold in the winter (highs in the 50's sometimes 40's). But the heat isn't as bad as Barstow; however, we do get colder than Barstow in the winter. I have been through Barstow many times and it really is a "service" town. It has grown as people move out of LA to afford housing, but so has Bakersfield.
We have 3 semi-pro sports teams here (baseball, basketball, and hockey). We have major concerts here (Ozzy will is here tonight in fact) at one of 3 places that is able to hold them. We have a mall, 3 major movie theaters, too many restaurants to name, along with a pretty good night life in the "down town" area (the older art deco section of town).
Also, just an hour's drive out of Bakersfield are tons of outdoor activities. Kernville (to the northeast) has river rafting, fishing, and all sorts of art fairs and such during the summer. Also, in the Kernville area is Lake Isabella where you can go water skiing, tubing, fishing, and camping. Then to the east is Tehachapi. This is a neat mountain town. They grow apples up there (they are at 4000 feet) and in the fall you can go apple picking. To the west is Pismo Beach. I'm not sure how long a drive it is because I've never made it, but it's not too long. To the north an hour and a half is Tulare. They have a HUGE outlet mall there.
Anyway, Bakersfield is only about 2 hours north of LA. You should come up and stay the night and take a look around. See if you like the place.

If it is only between those areas Bakersfield is a city with almost 400.000 people and all normal city services and facilities including great public transit linking to other areas. Barstow is basically just a small desert service town along the LA to Las Vegas coridor and only has a population of less than 50.000 with little to do and few real choices as far as transportation and services. Personally, my suggestion to those wanting a good place to raise a family is get out of California altogether! Good Luck.

I would say Bakersfield, better enviroment, more to do, and its a growing city. I do hear there are gang problems, but not everywhere. Its more of a farming communityh. Barstow would be torture living there. Its right smack dab in the middle of the Mojave desert, there are not many to do, the whole town is dirty and dusty, and I think the whole town relies primarily on travellers from LA to Vegas, to make money. Coming from LA, Barstow would be an extreme culture shock. Bakersfield is more do-able in my opinion.

Bakersfield is bigger than Barstow so you will have the same problems that LA has. The bad side of a smaller town is less things to do. Also Barstow is a desert town. HOT in summer.

Both are very hot areas, but Bakersfield is best by far. Barstow is in the middle no where...in the middle of the desert.

I suggest you avoid that area.
Move to a place like Carmel or Monterey - stay close to the Ocean.
