Fender make a "Squire" series of guitars that are copies of their more expensive guitars.buy a new one. buying a used guitar can be dangerous as you may need to have a "set-up',which can be expensive or it might have a warped neck or tampered or worn frets.happy playing!

I would recommend against buying a Squier, simply because they're very low quality instruments. I have a friend who has one, and the thing is seriously falling apart.

Another recommendation: if you're serious about learning, I would recommend buying an acoustic guitar first, and then buying an electric when you've got some experience. You don't need to buy an amp right away if you start acoustic. If you want an acoustic, Seagull makes excellent guitars--handmade in Quebec, so no Chinese junk--and their prices really aren't half bad. You might be able to pick up an Epiphone for a decent price too.

If you've got your heart set on getting an electric, I would recommend an Epiphone. Dean and Schecter make good guitars as well. Hope that helps!

wal-marts first act guitars are fine electrics for beginners,i bought guitar and amp for less than 200 usd.
i've been playing for about 33 years but went through an acoustic phase for the last 10 years or so,and just recently went back to electrics.also the practice amp that comes with it can be made into a pre amp by useing about 7 dollars worth of cords e- mail me for details.
good luck and i hope you have as much fun as i do.

The Fender Squier range is good, so are Peavey. Both brands do a kit (guitar and practice amp). We bought our daughter a Squier Strat a few years ago and it is still going strong and is a good instrument. go to your local music shop and see what's on offer. Take a knowledgeable friend with you if possible andtry out a few.. Hope this helps
