Learned that one from being a 12-step teacher to athiests. It's difficult for athiests to follow the 12 steps when the word GOD is used in so many of them. Hence the anagram. I think it's appropriate.

most attempts to define god involve stating what god is not: immaterial, immortal, etc. for some reason though it is always assumed that god has the property of existence. i don't see any good reason to do this.

Instead of "GOD", I prefer using the phrase "higher power". GOD is singular and other cultures may have more than one. Religion is man-made and separates us. My church is in my heart. I think the term "GOD" means: Don't judge, be kind, and enjoy life and family.
