How can she hear if she is only human? In fact the Cathos seem to spend more time praying to her than to God - take the rosary for example.

Cheers - ex-catholic

To Dava you are really good (as most catholics are) at twisting scriptures to meet your beliefs. Pray you get the right revelation one day

Because she is a good intercessor. We see this in John 2. If Mary wasn't an important part of the story, the author would have left her out of the equation entirely. However, he takes careful pains to explain that Jesus wasn't going to start His public ministry at that time and only did so because Mary asked Him too. He honors May as His mother, the way any good Jewish person who observed the 10 Commandments does, and we can trust that to continue to be true. But Mary would never ask Jesus to do something outside God's will and we know that she says to us, "Do whatever He tells you to do."

And we DON'T spend more time praying to Mary than to God. Every time we ask Mary for help, we are praying WITH her TO God. Get the difference?

Since you didn't pay much attention to your Catholic education when you were a kid -- or maybe you were denied a proper education by negligent parents -- you may want to read "What Catholics REALLY Believe" or other books that actually explain REAL Catholicism. Then you can lay claims against Catholicism based on FACT instead of assumption...er, no pun intended.

@ Vincent: Well it isn't unbiblical to go to confession--Jesus says to confess and repent which is what confession is. Before the lovely English Protestants removed the Apocrypha from the Bible sometime in the Reformation, there was a book in it (still in the Catholic Bible and I believe the Torah) Maccabees, that talks about Purgatory. They are praying for the souls in Purgatory. Is that such an evil thing, trying to help the souls get to heaven?

Some believe she is not "just" human but the Ark of the New Covenant. The easiest explanation I can make for non-catholics is this. When you do wrong do you go straight to your dad? No, you go to grandma. Can she do anything for you, not really, except for talk to dad so that he doesn't punish you as hard. The prayer Hail Mary is as follows: Hail Mary full of grace, the Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the Fruit of your womb, Jesus. (Then one of the "mysteries" such as - who strengthens our hope). Holy Mary, mother of God, pray for us sinners now at the hour of our death. Amen.

Wow, ex-Catholic...did you learn anything about your own religion?

Mary is held in high regard, the veneration and proud love can be mistaken by many non-Catholics as adoration worship. After all she chose to take up the task to be the mother of Jesus.

Anyhoo...as you should know, adoration for Mary (and any other human held in the same regard) is forbidden by Canon and Divine Law. As for the Rosary, it is a progression of prayers, and yes the Hail Mary is used often, but it the Rosary is a way for Catholics of offer reflection and meditate over the mysteries of Christ and his mother...

She 'hears' us because God allowes her too. She knows the glorys of heaven and wants to help us with our struggles in life. If you paid any attention to anything in your Catholic teachings, the Hail Marys in the Rosary are 'background' music for the meditation part.

We ask Mary to pray for us.

I too, am a former Catholic. Catholics pray to Mary because she has been named a saint. Those who pray want her to intercede with her son, Jesus for them. Catholics are big on praying to patron saints and it's to intercede to Jesus. I suppose they feel unworthy to pray directly to GOD.

Mary was a pious and chaste woman who gave birth to Jesus (PBUH). She never claimed divinity. Even Jesus (PBUH) never claimed to be God. He was a prophet of God.

Catholics do not believe Mary is only human. They believe she is sinless and a virgin after having 4 sons and daughters beside Jesus. No wonder so many ex-catholics are now atheists.

Others in the Bible are called blessed. They are not worshiped. Mary was a woman. A good woman and a wife to Joseph and mother of 4 other sons and daughters.
