Most people go with a jacket that's not too bulky (Thinsulate, etc...) and wear a shirt and fleece layer underneath. Down is nice for the coldest part of the season or extremely cold areas. Very warm and very light.

I took a look at what Abercrombie had to offer. There are things that would work. Don't really have that ski jacket look though and they seem a little pricy...

Most of the ski shops and sporting goods stores are very overpriced on skiwear.

I'd check out some jackets online at Land's End or L.L. Bean. They make some excellent ski jackets at very reasonable prices. Ski pants are a must!!! Get some with a fleece lining or wear fleece sweats under basic nylon shell ski pants. 90% of the skiers you see will be wearing them and the rest will be cold and wet.

Insulated nylon gloves perfect for skiing are fairly easy to come by these days. The ski stores will rob you blind on gloves. You may want to visit a ski or sporting goods store to find the perfect hat. You'll pay too much, but finding a ski hat that matches your jacket and that you like the look and fit of isn't easy sometimes.

Depends on where you are skiing and when. Skiing in Vermont in January, I would want a very warm jacket. Keep in mind that the peak of some of the larger slopes can be 20 degrees colder than the base and if you factor in the additional wind, it can be downright miserable if you are not dressed properly.
Look at a ski shop jacket rather than an abercrombie. You can still get a cool jacket and it will keep you warm.

When skiing you want a jacket that has zippers on all pockets so that nothing falls out when you fall. And you will fall. Down jackets are warmest but most expensive. There are newer fabrics that are also very warm and whisk away any sweat and you will sweat also. Most important is a warm hat. Most of your heat is lost thru your head if you don't have a good hat.
