Well Edgar, I am not a lawyer but I understand dogs quite well. I think this question would be better asked in a legal forum on Yahoo answers. But, my best guess is this - had you swung away at the dogs, you probably would have gotten banged-up pretty good yourself. Pit bulls can be vicious fighters and I think you might have regretted it. I used to run (for exercise) frequently and would get chased by dogs all the time. I carried a club about 18 inches long. And, I normally could just "present" the club to the dogs and the dogs would stay far enough away that I could not reach them. Had I been in your shoes today, I would have done the same with one of my golf clubs. But I wouldn't have swung at the dogs either. My best guess as to the legalities of you killing a dog are, if you have/had a witness, you would have been safe to kill the dog. If you didn't have a witness, it could easily be a messy trial. As an example, a guy I used to work with was home one day and his neighbor walked over and told him he had a stray dog in his back yard. The dog was foaming at the mouth so they killed it with a pocket-knife. They later found out the dog was only looking for water (since it was 95 degrees out) and belonged to a couple 3 houses down the road. The dog owners sued him and he ended up doing a few hundred hours of community service and buying them a new dog.

We've always trained our dogs to repond to a firm "no" or "quiet" when they're barking at something they shouldn't be. When the dog starts barking, tell them to be quiet. Keep repeating it until the dog stops barking and then praise them for responding correctly. A squirt bottle, a can full of pennies shaken to make loud noise, or even a rap on the nose with a couple of fingers can help inforce the command without hurting the dog.

It really depends on the type of dog and the age of the dog... We have a rottie and for the most part she's a wonderful addition to our family BUT, she has a tendency to bark... Especially, if left out in the backyard.. We have a wooded back lot and there's lots of deer, foxes, squirrels etc... She'll bark her head off if we let.. We have a bark collar it's run on a 9V battery and it's a "reminder" to not bark.. It gives a gentle "shock" if she barks a lot.. I've tested it on my self and while it's not pleasant it's not like it's hooked up to our car battery... I don't want her barking it's irritatiing to the neighbors.. Sometimes we put it on her even if the battery is dead and she knows not to bark... good luck

When is it barking? Where is it barking at? Is it alone? Is it barking at a certain thing or person? Need more information. You can try water bottles, sitronilla collars and stuff like that but I need more info to properly answer how to help the problem.

Maybe you can occupy the dog with games and toys. Sometimes dogs bark because they are bored or seeking attention. I hope this helps=)

Dogs usually bark because they're alone. Give him long walks and lots of attention, and the barking will cut way back.

The cheapest method is a spray bottle. You can also use collars that spray citronella (which dogs hate).

if you teach your dog to "speak" on command, he is less likley to bark, because he will want a treat for it! and if that doesn't work, sometimes spray bottles work, but sometimes the dog thinks your playing when you squirt them.
