Roughly 3 times the amount of information. But many other things are increased:

- More lines of resolution
- Color is built into the spec (With NTSC, color was added later)
- Much wider range of colors (color depth) with HDTV
- Colors are more solid not faded next to other contrasting colors
- Digital nature tends to reduce or eliminate all snow/fade that standard def suffers

All these advantages create a much more real-life picture with jaw-droppingly fantastic colors and realism.

But it's hard to put a number to them.

In the UK and most of Europe we are used to 625 line PAL that is 576i

In the US and Japan the colour system was 525 line NTSC that is 480i

A frequent HD definition is 1080i

But that said it really is up to the broadcaster as to what they wish to call HD

High definition is all in how good your service provider is . If you have a standard tv you can def tell the differnce
