In the above verses we read "if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you." The comforter can not be the Holy Ghost because the Holy Ghost (according to the Bible) was "with" them already (and even quite active) long before the coming of Jesus (peace be upon him) himself and then throughout his ministry. Read for example.
Genesis 1:2 "And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness [was] upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters."
1 Samuel 10:10 "And when they came thither to the hill, behold, a company of prophets met him; and the Spirit of God came upon him, and he prophesied among them."
1 Samuel 11:6 "And the Spirit of God came upon Saul when he heard those tidings, and his anger was kindled greatly."
"Then he remembered the days of old, Moses, and his people, saying, Where is he that brought them up out of the sea with the shepherd of his flock? where is he that put his holy Spirit within him?" (Isaiah 63:11)
"For he (John the Baptist) shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb." (Luke 1:15)
"And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee." (Luke 1:35)
"And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost" (Luke 1:41)
"And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying," (Luke 1:67)
"And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost was upon him." (Luke 2:25)

For 1 thing, you are confusing the biblical term "spirit of God" and "Holy Spirit". This is reasonable, as the 2 *are* easily confused. The "spirits of God" in 1Sa, for example, are literal spirits (angels, some say) who literally possessed Saul.
However, the important point here is that the Holy Spirit was *not* with the apostles, as the 1st answer said "indwelling", at this time. It is true that the Holy Spirit was operating, most definitely through Jesus, but (seemingly) *not* with the apostles until *after* the "tongues of fire" at Pentecost. John the Baptist was *not* one of those to whom Jesus was speaking at the time.
Note that there is one (and only one) *possible* discrepancy here - the sending out of the 70 disciples, who performed miracles in Jesus' name. I do not know the explanation of this, but *other* than this, the apostles seem to have performed no miracles until *after* the death of Jesus, and it was the apostles to whom Jesus was speaking. After the death of Jesus, the miracles performed by the apostles (particularly Peter and Paul) exceeded even those recorded of Jesus - just as he prophesied.

In a special way, the Comforter was not with Jesus followers until he went back to heaven. He sent the promised “helper”—the holy spirit—to strengthen his followers and to guide their efforts. As Acts 2:33 says: "Therefore because [Jesus] was exalted to the right hand of God and received the promised holy spirit from the Father, he has poured out this which you. see and hear."

2 Kings 2:9 And it came to pass, when they were gone over, that Elijah said unto Elisha, Ask what I shall do for thee, before I be taken away from thee. And Elisha said, I pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me.
It was a greater "quantity" of the SPIRIT.
Elisha prayed for a "double portion" of the HOLY SPIRIT. At Pentecost, GOD sent the HOLY SPIRIT in a greater "quantity" to the disciples so that they may have the power to perform all sorts of wonderful things, such as, the Gifts of the SPIRIT.
More can be said.
GOD bless

The Holy Spirit has always been active since creation, but did not always dwell in the hearts of people. After the day of Pentecost the Holy Spirit was given to dwell in the hearts of all who would accept Jesus as their Savior.

Jesus was speaking to His apostles of the Holy Ghost. They could not have the Holy Ghost as long as they had Jesus in their presence. Children of Light know the Holy Spirit resides inside them. He guides and Comforts them at all times.Paul tells us that our bodies are the Temple of the Holy Spirit" and that our bodies are not ours but Gods.

The Holy Spirit is God and of course God was present in the form of the Holy Spirit, but he did not in-dwell the people. It was only upon Jesus that the Holy Spirit RESTED. He was only with others for a time. Now, when the Holy Spirit was coming, it was for him to dwell in us eternally.

do not truly get your question, yet will do my proper to respond to. the Holy Spirit is the 0.33 individual contained in the Trinity of God. ( Father, Son and Holy Spirit). once you ask Jesus into your existence and settle for Him as your Lord and Saviour (He died on the go and through doing this He paid the cost that God demanded be paid for each of the wrongdoing actually everyone has achieved), the Holy Spirit comes and makes you a sparkling individual and lives in you to assist and coaching guide you, and fill you with each of the means of God even as in this existence, till you visit heaven. in case you do not settle for Jesus into your existence, the Holy Spirit gained't come and stay in you and also you wont visit heaven.
