I would give it to the homeless person because I know I have family that would help me.

That is a very simplistic question with insufficient information. How long has it been since your own family has eaten?
How long before food will be available for your family?
Do you mean that one person is going to starve and you want us to decide who it will be?
Only someone not being serious would answer the question the way you asked it and say the poor helpless being. While it is true that you are instructed to do for the least of them, it is also true that God is not asking us to make a blood sacrifice of our first born child.
Bad question, ill thought out.

The hungry man. If I had $5.00 and a family in the first place then surely I have more than the lost hungry one. $5.00 can get an awful lot of food if spent wisely. My family and the hungry man would both eat.
And tomorrow? Well we'll let that take care of itself won't we? Today has troubles enough.
Having been taught that by the Messiah I feel confident that God will take care of tomorrow as well, Possibly with $7.00? Or perhaps $15.00?
Who knows?

I would use the $5.00 to buy soup and crackers, and share with the hungry being, (who if they have not had food for some days needs to be careful at first how much they eat) and my family. If you shop carefully the $5.00 would buy all of that.
I hope I have never turned anyone from my door hungry if I could help it.

This question breaks my heart.
I'd feed my daughter first, if the poor hungry person was a child or a babe then I'd buy something for him or her too of course. Thankfully when someone - anyone hungry comes to my door I am able to give them a bag of food.

My own family
Bible says a man who does not provide for his own family is worse than an infidel
poor you will always have with you is what Jesus said
the Bible makes reference to the fact that we should take care of the poor in our gates or our own community
if each took care of the starving in their own community there would be none to starve

My daughter. God has appointed me her guardian and care-taker until she is old enough to make her own $5.00. She comes before anyone. Even the helpless stranger.

My family comes first; they are as deserving as anybody else, and there's no reason I should feed someone else instead. Five bucks wouldn't buy much food here, though! It MIGHT get me a loaf of bread and a jar of peanut butter, but I'm not even sure about THAT.
