I used some Hartz flea spray on my cats, and they started crying and running around like maniacs. So I wiped off their necks with cool tap water, and stopped using the product. Later, I heard Hartz flea products are dangerous. Is this true?

Yes, it's true. I'm sure other people's answers will direct you to the Hartz victims website.

It's not just Hartz that's dangerous, it's many store-bought products. The reason for this is that stores and supermarkets are not licensed to supply the chemicals appropriate for safe and effective flea treatment, so any flea product available in a store is going to contain one of many basic pesticides. These are usually organophosphates; old-fashioned chemicals that are more widely used for crop spraying! Not really something that should be applied to animals, especially cats. One of the most widely used organophosphates in these products is Permethrin, which is highly toxic to cats. Permethrin is a pyrethroid - as is Phenothrin, the main ingredient in Hartz. Stay well away, and please help spread the word so we can get these unscrupulous bastard's products off the shelves!!

Everyone should know by now that the Hartz products SUCK!!! And there are MANY cases that involve deaths from the products. People just see the cheap prices and buy them anyway!!! Biospot is a waste of money too!!! I have seen tons of cats and dogs LOADED with fleas that had been treated with Biospot. Pay a little extra and get Frontline or Advantage!

Hartz has a history, a very unsavoury one in the United States. I’ve been aware of an online campaign by enraged dog and cat owners who end up with dead furries or furries with permanent mental or physical damage from using Hartz products, not to mention the emotional and financial stress.
A class action suit was also filed.

Cats are very sensitive creatures and any drug or chemical has potential for causing negative reactions in certain cats. Hartz products have been associated with more incidents of reactions than most other medications. To be fair, this may be because their name is so well known and their products so widely distributed that this may be a result of the high sales numbers. A flea medication made specifically for fleas and considered somewhat safe for use on cats is Advantage.

Any over the counter flea product is truly crap. Stick to topical flea preventions like Revolution, Frontline, etc.

Hartz doesn't work.. and pass on the flea collars. I've seen more cats harmed by them than done any good.

Hartz is truly one of the most awful ones out on the market. A google.com search on 'hartz lawsuit' will give you a lot to think about.

Get your flea products from the vet, they get them direct from the manufacturer and won't have expired meds, won't have counterfit meds (yes, these turn up in stores) and they won't have improperly prepared meds (too strong a dose).

Doesn't work. Only thing that works for us is Avantage or Frontline.

I use a Hartz product on one of my cats years ago and it almost killed her. Be careful please!

They can be, and some cats are more sensitive than others.

Stick with Advantage or Frontline.
