In your case, you would be better off buying your OWN car and insuring it and making monthly payments OR talking your parents into paying the difference to have you on their policy and letting you pay them back monthly.

You can't have insurance on THEIR car as they already have insurance on it and if your State sells a "non owners liability" policy, it wouldn't do you much good either, because it does not cover you if you are regularly furnished a vehicle to drive.

Good luck and I hope this helps!

how much the minimal amount of car insurance varies by state but i think now most are 25,000/50,000 but i do not think you could insure your parents car with a separate policy in your name as they would still have to have insurance in their name so it would raise their insurance rate anyway regardless of the fact that you bought your own policy which i do not think you will be able to do anyway since the car is already insured

No one is going to sell you a named nonowner policy so you can drive a car that's regularly furnished for your use.

You are going to have to be added to their insurance policy.

Save up! They might pay yearly, but if you have half the money, when their policy is half over, well, you'll only be charged for six months.

They call it LIABILITY insurance for a reason.
If your parents let you drive the car, they are
responsible for your driving of it.
If you want to drive that car, you've got to
pay the freight.
If you could buy minimum coverage for yourself,
your parents would be on the hook for any
damage over your limit.

you cannot have a non owner policy when you have regular access to a car. the cheapest way to do it would be to get an old beater car and just place liability on it for you. your insurance is not going to be "cheap" for a few years since you are young.

Insurance generally goes with the car, not the driver. If you are not covered under their policy already, you need to add your name to their policy. No way around it. Borrow it from someone or ask them to change their payment plan.
