"Living well is the best revenge." Yes, believe it or not, it was that sweet, saintly poet George Herbert. However, he said (or simply recorded) it in a collection of proverbs. And if he indeed originated the saying, he, being the kind of person his poems reveal, no doubt meant something a little different from the way it's usually interpreted. "Living well" to him probably meant living a godly life, rising above the injury done to one, rather than out-succeeding the person who did it.
