Read and meet! Go to the net and read up on all the breeds. They are all awesome dogs but very different in temperaments. It all depends on what you want from dog! I Great Pyrenees and wouldn't trade them for any other but just because they suit us, doesn't mean they would suit you. You find some folks who own each of these breeds and meet them. Good luck to you!

Depends on what you want from the breed. I agree shelters need help but so do rescurers of the breeds! If you want guard dogs that bark all night - well I have a Pyr and the are loving and devoted. I dont know about newfoundlands or mastiff's but I am sure they are great dogs also. I suggest you get in contact with a local rescue group for a breed that you read up on and talk to them. When you get a larger dog - make sure you are ready to take on all the responsibilities that come with them (late nite barking, intimiding looking). And most important - the vet!!!!! All dogs need care and larger breeds can have more problems. I have adopted so many from the shelter that have been the best most devoted - but I wanted a Pyr. I have never regreted getting her! I strongly suggest you read about the breed of dog. They are true to their breed! Be prepared! And I hope you wont be disappointed!

First, what is the climate like around where you live. If it snows I would suggest either a Newfoundland or Great Pyrenees. If you live around water I'd suggest a Newfoundland because you can easily exercise the dog with the water. They are strong swimmers and can easily be trained as rescue dogs. If you live in an open area with lots of land you may want to consider a Great Pyrenees.

They are all fabulous dogs! I personally like the Newfie, though- so cuddly and cute. My daughter loves the mastiff. They're great breeds- a matter of taste in the end, I guess, Good luck with whatever you decide!

like the others here, adoption/rescue is something to feel good about. i have both a pyr and newfie. i am partial to newfs and have had 3. newfs don't require a lot of space but do require excersize and a reasonable climate. pyrs are wonderful but have some protection issues and aren't for everybody. research is good. the descriptions you read are very true and the little words mean what they say. fenced yards are recommened. good luck

I think you obviously should do some research. All of these breeds are different, but they are all working breeds that will require alot of work and attention, along with training and knowledge of their inherited traits. I would recommend going to AKC.com and researching each breed to see which, if any, will fit your lifestyle and BUDGET. Grooming and health care are going to big big $$$ as well.

mastiff. all three breeds are droolers and prone to the same big dog health issues like hip dysplasia, but the mastiff doesn't require grooming, and they're much more relaxed than the other two.

If at all possible, please adopt a pet rather than buy from a breeder.
And, make sure you know what you are getting yourself into with these dogs. Lots of hair and lots.....lots of slobber!
