That's an interesting question, that I'm not sure I've ever thought about before. Hmmm. I agree with the answerer who suggests that rock as a form of music is mostly easier than classical. I also agree with the answerer who says that clasical musicians actually read music and notes as opposed to tab aka "Notation for Dummies" (I put that in quotes because a good tab reader IS reading music, just in a different "language".

My thought is that at their best, rock and classical are similarly difficult. After all, its the same instrument, the same strings, etc. While a lot of rock "guitar heroes" might not read music, they employ exactly the same musical abilities, phrases, structures, tonalities, scales, riffs, gimmicks, etc as the classically trained musicians---whether they know it or not!
So, at the very highest quality end, I think it's real close.

Neither is harder/easier than the other because boundaries will always be pushed in both genres. There probably exists more simple music as a whole for rock which could make it a simpler form, but at its best and hardest I'd say it would be a tie. Same goes for other types of music too like Jazz........

Based on what I can hear, rock is down at the bottom in playing difficulty. Jazz, true folk, and classical are all more difficult and each of them has advanced aspects that I don't see touched in rock. PBS is showing another Eric Clapton guitar festival, this one in Chicago that you might catch.
