Kata (型 or 形, literally: "form"?) is a Japanese word describing detailed choreographed patterns of movements practiced either solo or in pairs. Kata are used in many traditional Japanese arts such as theater forms like kabuki and schools of tea ceremony (chadō), but are most commonly known for the presence in the martial arts

Kata means "form" in the literal sense but the ideograms give you the impression of a mold. Like taking a box or a bottle or anything that you can fill with liquid where the liquid becomes the shape of the vessel you are pouring it into.
In the same way, your body is the liquid and the kata is the mold. If you let the kata shape you, you can unlock the techniques that are contained in it.
The kata of your art teaches you the techniques that are characteristic of your art.
There is grappling, trapping, throwing, ki development and projection, pressure point techniques all in the kata.
This aspect of karate has been lost but there are teachers out there who are true to there art, search out these teachings and pass them on to their students.

A kata is a prearranged series of movements, all of which are self-defense oriented but they are put together in a beautiful way so that it looks like it is just a dance which in many ways it is. Each kata is unique and has different points of emphasis (some on a certain strike, a certain stance, breathing, ect.). Each block, strike, through, ect. is aimed at an imaginary opponent and the idea is that by imagining this opponent and responding accordingly a person will respond this way in real life as well because over time a karateka will develop muscle memory.

Kata is a series of punches, kicks and blocks done in a smooth rhythm. Usually takes a few minutes to perform and is meant to show your athletic abilities, balance, and your form pertaining to your style of karate. This is usually performed in front of your sensei or teacher and when completed correctly a new level or belt color is awarded.
