I take an old sock an tie a double knot in it, firm, but not too tight. M dog loves to play with it and to try to undo the knot, or pay tug-of-war with me. No expense involved and hours of fun for your dog.

That would depend on his size/breed. My dog gets a "springpole" contraption with a go-cart tire because he loves to tug and shake and pull. I'm no longer physically able to handle the stress on my shoulders so we've had to let him play tug with a tree. For the 6lb Dachshund, Chihuahua mix it's three socks, twisted and knotted together. Amazingly neither of them go after the "good" socks, they'll only play with knotted ones:D

you can take a tennis ball and some rope and drill a hole through the ball and thread the rope through the hole and make a knot.
you can also take a kitchen dish towel, and cut one inch strips from it. then you tightly braid them and knot it at either end. you can also use cloth napkins and old socks for smaller dogs.
never give your old shoes to your dog because then, there's a big chance that it will start taking your good shoes (it cannot tell the difference) and then, it's very hard to stop them from chewing on your good shoes.

Get some old panty hose and cut them off at the knees. You then stretch them out and add as many knots as you can for the length, my dog LOVES his *fuglies*.
