Most dogs will defend the home quite well. have a little Lhasa Apso and let me tell you... he scared the carpet cleaning people out of here when they tried to get in when I wasn't home. (apartments) I have also had to do emergency dog walks and the smaller dogs, even when they are complete lovers with the family, will attack someone they don't know who has entered the house.

If you are going for the big look... then get a German Shepard. Be sure to get it through a reputable breeder because if they have been breeding inside the family, you will wind up with defects of character. German Shepard's are great with the family and loving but can also be trained to attack an intruder.

Whatever you decide.. ... don't just get a dog if you are only doing it for security reasons. Even the most protective dog needs a family that loves him/her.

You are far better off buying an alarm system and getting a "family" dog. Getting a dog with the sole intent of it being a "guard" dog opens up a whole new world of problems which you really don't want to find out about first hand. If you have a large amount of money you don't know what to do with, contact a breeder/trainer that specializes in "home protection" NEVER try to train a "guard" dog by yourself unless you have quite a bit of knowledge and experience. It almost never works out well.

I have both a German Shepherd and a Rodesian Ridgeback and I could never ask for better dogs. Both are very good with kids and family and friends, but they both are very protective. In fact, once someone came into our house while the kids were home and they didn't knock. The dogs had him cornered (a huge six foot six guy who weighs around 300) and they didn't touch him. He was just a friend who was checking in, but still, they weren't going to take any chances with the kids. Either breed will be great.

It is strictly a matter of preference. I prefer imported (if you are American and definitely not one solely registered with the AKC or UKC) German Shepherd Dogs because of their extreme trainability and even demeanor. However, don't make the mistake of training the dog to bite - a dog is great for security mainly because the criminals will go to your neighbor's dogless house rather then yours. Making a big racket if someone "invades" is good as long as there are few false alarms (neighbors will rightfully complain about the noise). With a well-bred dog, it should come natural and training will be for obedience. I don't recommend "fully trained" guard dogs as they really need a professional trainer as owner, they are extraordinarily expensive, and their service life is short - a home security system works out to be cheaper and just as effective.

All of the listed dogs do make good guard dogs, but there is a good one that few people know about. A Rhodesian Ridgeback is an awesome guard dog. They are great with kids and very loyal, but are very strong, intimidating, and protective of its family. Pretty cool looking too (it has a mohawk.) And just to let you know how tough they are, they were bread to hunt lions in Africa.

Most of the bigger herding dogs are good security dogs. German Shepards, rotties, etc. If you want something interesting, get a Belgium Sheep dog or a Belgium Tervuren.

If you want a nice smaller sized dog that makes an excellent watch dog look at Tibetan Spaniels.

You have 2 train this dog 2 become a guard dog. The more people you expose it to, then it will be very less likey to guard. Guard dogs=German Sheppard, Rots, Pitt Bull. And just about any dogs are good Watch Dogs. Google it and you will find butt loads of information.

The best well-known types of guard dogs are rottweilers, dobermans, german shepards, and bull mastiffs. You need to look them up some more because the dogs behavior and needs has to work well with the environment you have.
