You shouldn't. The PS3 is way better than the Wii. If you don't like any of the Nintendo franchises, then you shouldn't even bother getting a Wii. The Wii's strongest and best games are the Nintendo franchises, like Zelda, Smash Bros., Metroid, Mario, etc. Good 3rd party games for the Wii are far and few.
The PS3, on the other hand, has a lot of good first, second, and 3rd party games. First party games: God of War3, Motorstorm, Killzone 2. Second party games: Resistance, Ratchet & Clank, Uncharted. Third party games: Metal Gear Solid 4, Final Fantasy XIII, FF vs. XIII.
The 20, 60, and 80 gb PS3 can play PS2 games, but the 20 and 60 plays the most PS2 games because of the emotion engine. The 80 gb uses software emulation for PS2 backward compatibility, so the 80 gb won't play as many PS2 games as the 20 and 60 gb version. The 40 gb CANNOT and WILL NOT play PS2 games.
All PS3 can play regular DVD as well as CDs and Blu-rays.

I chose both Wii and PS3. The reasons why you would choose Wii for most people is the motion controls, but for me it was Super Mario Galaxy, Zelda, etc. Although the Wii uses the motion control, in most of the games it is integrated much like a regular controller, so it doesn't get gimmicky like people claim.
PS3 will play PS2 games after downloading the update over the internet. Note, however, that the new cheaper PS3 reportedly doesn't play anywhere near as much PS2 games as the 60GB (which I find strange because it is a software download). And yes, PS3 will play DVDs as well as the new Blu-Ray discs (consequently, it is the cheapest Blu-Ray player on the market, if that means anything at all to you).
As far as graphics go, the PS3 is the superior console of this generation in that area and the Wii is the least of the consoles in that area. But graphics is not something I really judge games on, seeing as even the Wii's graphics are a vast improvement over last generation and are about as good as we really need them to be. Although the gorgeous photo-realism of COD 4 on the PS3 is very impressive. On that note, if you like to play First Person Shooters, then the PS3 is the definite choice, because the Wii is a little hard to control when playing Shooters.
It's really just what you prefer in games.

From a technical standpoint, the wii isn't in the ps3 neighborhood in terms of connectivity for hd sources graphically or audio ! Price is the wii's biggest advantage since it only costs $249.99 !
The PS3 can play all types of dvd's, cd's and ps2 games ! The current 40gb version of the PS3 CANNOT play PS2 games ! The 60 GB and 80 GB versions of the PS3 can play PS2 games although the 80 GB versions only plays some PS2 titles !

Cheaper and the gimmicky motion controller. You'll also get an excuse to get a new one at an earlier date because the less powerful hardware will mean a lot of games won't be able to ported to it.
Better to just get a PC with better hardware though.
