In your opinion, what is the highest velocity, deepest penetrating bullet commonly avaliable? (other than the the .50 bmg, thats not economical!)
Thanks for any help!

In what configuration ? Pistol or rifle ?
Overpenetration never seemed like a good thing to me...
An example of a fast, penetrating pistol round would be
the CZ-52 using the 7.62 X 25.

Deep penetration and highest velocity do not necessarily go together. The deepest penetrating (commonly available-I know some are better) is probably a 500 grain solid from a .458 Winchester Magnum. Velocity is around 2100 fps. Highest velocity is around 4000 fps-.204 Ruger, 220 Swift. Penetration is very little. Something in the middle would be like a .338 Winchester Magnum, with moderate penetration, at almost 3000 fps.

High velocity and deep penetration aren't normally on a line with each other. Which is more important to you, and to what purpose? I'd consider the 160 grain bullets in either 6.5x68 or 264 WinMag (they're ballistically identical) to be a top candidate. I can't think of another bullet with the .328 sectional density of that long, skinny bullet to promote penetration, and as heavy-for-caliber as they are, those cartridges will push them out of the muzzle at 2900 fps.

Anything from a .338 up with a fully-jacketed bullet is capable of going completely through a 40" cottonwood tree. Do you need more than that?

Better penetration = less stopping power.

a 300 rem. ultra mag is the fastest 30 cal. bullet on the market. you can get from 150 gr. up to 220 gr in custom loads long range rifle. the 7mm mag is probably the best all around and most common rifle on the market. look at some ballistic charts and compare...

Take a look at the .375 H&H Magnum, 300gr FMJ RN made by Hornady. It is listed as a heavy magnum. Can be found in most gun shops.

What the hell are you trying to kill. You can hunt rabbits with a 375 H&H mag , but I wouldn't recomend it
