You are not asking how many planes are in the air at any particular hour or time, you are asking how many different flights are in the air for a whole day. If there are approximately 13,000 planes in the air at a peak time, during a 24 hour day some 25000 flights have taken off and landed.

In the US at peak times approximately 60,000 are in the air at one time.

There are radar maps that show the US with a blip for every airliner in the air and its location.
