I agree. The color image is just great! The problem (for me) with the B&W is not so much the background, but the total lack of anything on the dark side of her face. Combining that with the dark background makes the light side of her face look kind of abnormally large. Some of this is distortion from shooting so close with your widest wide angle setting, but you might have been able to bounce a bit of fill light into the dark side with something as simple as a sheet of white paper.

Works beautifully on the colored kitty photos but it doesn't work for me in the black white kitty shot because there's just not enough in the frame to counteract the darkness of the background. It becomes too blended and the face is lost.
Great looking kitty!

The flash needs to be diffused a little to give a softer edge. Try shooting the flash through a piece of white linen or other thin material. That will also lighten the shadow area a little bit. The dark background is fine which allows you to concentrate on you kitty.

An eye on left side must using soft lighting to control by a small flash.
