I think it is because people like to disrespect other people's opinions and this is the best place to do it because people have a LOT of opinions about religion. There also seems to be a LOT more trolls here than other places. Is R&S located under a cyber-bridge?
I personally think they should sub-divide the religion section into the various religions to lessen the infighting. My mom used to say... "Am I going to have to separate you to stop the fighting?"

Nah, it's not about violence and oppression. It's because religious topics are about the "big questions" of life and thus grab one's attention, but there is also a lack of real evidence for or against the different ideas that come up. Appeals to holy writ only lead to, "It's true!"/ "No, it's not!" type arguments, and when that occurs then nobody gets anywhere.
So essentially, the very nature of this topic is one where lots of important and deeply held ideas will clash with each other with almost nothing in the way of common ground from which to sort them out.
I don't think there's any problem with people arguing about this, personally. A good argument can be really intellectually stimulating and spur you to deeper thought on a topic. When that happens, it's wonderful! It's the poor arguments that get really tiresome for me.

Its in our nature, since the beginning of the human race. Everyone is defending his/her believes, an as opiniate about it as the next person. Everybody wants to show how knowledgable he/she is about his/her religious believes.
Thats why Great Teachers are being sent to tell us what it is we are arguing about, to satisfy the need, giving us the true answer to our despearate need of fullfilling the soul's hunger.
The Soul is ever hungry, and that is why we do things to satisfy the desire to fullfill our craving.. and like it or not, the "food" that it craves is the fullfilling love of God. Before we are all born into this world, Before we have a physical existence, while we are still in the spirit realm, we have made a pack with God.
... and we shall remember it again when we step over the other side of death. Then shalt thou find the truth of what are thee looking for... and who it is have the better answer, Wait thou and we shalt wait too. Death come to us all.

Well, to be very frank (by the way, an excellent question).
Most Fundies come here to convert the unconvertable.
Most Athiests come here to confirm that religion is foolish.
Most Agnostics are looking to see some truth.
Most trolls love to stir up things.
And me, I enjoy the different points of view, and the sillyness, and occasionally, a rare bit of great wisdom comes through.
Peace be with you!

Because none of it is based on facts, just beliefs and there is no way one persons beliefs can change anothers so you'll just go back and forth forever unless one belief is crushed by force. Not saying that is right or wrong just the way it is, Look at history. Religions never die out or are adopted by another group of people unless overwelming force is applied..

Try the pet section some time - the arguments between the rescue people and the breeders can also become very ugly.

See, the man has become to be like one of them...to know good and evil... Adam, did you not learn your lesson when they threw you out of Eden before? Congratulations, for seeing the truth..now, get out of here, before they report you for telling on them... and you get a violation notice for doing nothing wrong in particular. Myself? I'm busy looking for the Tree of Life...whatever, or whoever that is. Then, I'm outta here myself!
