There are several Christians here who have used England as an example and don't see why we can't make Christianity the "official religion" (I suppose besides that whole First Amendment thing) Why? WHY must Christians plaster thier faith on every street corner, in every school, in every part of our lives and then blame the worlds woes on the fact that we all don't want to believe like them? Why is respecting thier fellow man to make thier own choices so hard? Why on earth would we want it to be the official religion? REGARDLESS of what you THINK this country was "founded on" it has EVOLVED ( Oh no the "E" word!!) into a country of melting pot faiths. People rise thier lives to get here in order to have FREEDOM OF RELGION. THAT is what America is based on, why change that?

You misunderstand me. The COUNTRY is a melting pot of faiths, as in there are a lot of them, not that they are alike.
I don't mind anyone showing thier faith, I mind it being screamed from the street corners. It's just.....creepy

And for the record, you have no idea what kind of "people" I am. I don't scream about anyone putting anything out. Does it irk me? Yes, I just don't understand why people feel it needs to be there when it's also in every church yard in town. But if the majority wants it there, so be it. It doesn't change my beliefs in the least.

I agree with you that the worst thing that could happen is to have a state religion. The US was set up on the idea that no religion would be the official religion and people were free to choose. There would never be a significant movement to reverse that, and if there were, that would be a sign that we are in deep trouble.

I don't get it either. And they really don't think about it. They want their type of Christianity... not that other, false Christianity everyone else has. But what happens if it is that "false" Christianity they don't like? Then they'll cry that their rights are being trampled and it's not fair.
You've put more bad words in there than just that E word! Respect is another one... how dare you ask them to give common courtesy to everyone. Love your neighbor has nothing to do with that ;-) And choices? No way... you're goin way out there now! In spite of the fact that their God supposedly gives everyone the freedom of choice... they don't want you to do that! Just choose Jesus, damnit!

Because then people could be labeled "good and bad" w/o violating someone's right to freedom of religion.
The problem people have with no formally established faith, is that they feel they have no way to justify their beliefs with law.
They believe XYZ, you and I believe ABC, ... and they want the RIGHT to tell us that we're not only WRONG, but it is illegal to believe as we do.
*sigh*
Its just easier to label everyone than to have to deal with the truth- which is that some people believe differently than others.
I have to say, I cannot understand why ANY diety would get behind organized religion - of ANY denomination.
Why?
Well how many wars have been (and ARE!!) fought in the name of god?
How many people have died in the name of god?
In Christian texts, god causes massive floods, plagues, etc,... if he was really behind the war in the middle east, wouldn't he be able to just sneeze and wipe out the infideles?
Instead, I fear that god (or the goddess, or whomever) weeps everytime a life is laid down in the name of religion.
It is supposed to unite, not divide.
But until people can learn to be tolerant...
Hatred, Judgement, and Death will prevail- disguised as religion.

1. Because they're idiots.
2. the US was NOT based on christianity. The founding fathers were agnostics and atheists.
3. I would move to canada the day that the US adopts some false religion as the official state religion.
Christianity is a false religion. Christ never was born, never lived and never died.
So cheers to the great 1st amendment!

Because, Religion is very usable instrument to cover faults maid by politicians and explain as will of God! First, there is no one on Earth which can approve the opposite and knows not enough to discuss it. Religion, in each one form makes people unable to thing free, to live as a human being and push you in a group or a corner which you never will like!
People are going to the Church only they are depending! Have not enough to live as they likes, know not enough to struggle and have not enough connections to be independent to go and stay where he or she likes. Only people with money, wisdom and Fearless Friends are able to resist the religion and feel free to do Wat only they like! Didn't you reed the books of Dan Brown? "The DA Vinchy code" etc. Reed it!

England also recognizes other religions as being valid and doesn't force everyone to worship in one religion only.
Christians use their bible to justify "wanting to spread the Word" and force others to believe as they do and are insecure when faced with other religions and the fact that not everyone wants to be a christian. They can't understand anyone looking at their religion and saying "No" politely and walking away.

Amen sister. Look, England has their own stuff, we have ours. It's freedom OF and FROM religion people (for those who like to say OF not FROM...) And I wonder how they would like it if an atheist rose up saying that atheism should be the state un-religion! Or perhaps a pagan saying their beliefs are the state-religion! How would they like that then?

Christians feel obligated by the bible to evangelize. That is the root of most of the issues that non-Christians have with them - trying to shove their beliefs down everyone else's throats.
So the message is obvious: worship Jesus either by following our beautiful example of Christianity or worship Jesus because we will make you one way or another.
Note that the first method doesn't work so good so the carrot and stick method is more common.

I've never heard anyone saying they want an American version of the Church of England. Could you give us some evidence?
Also, this country did not evolve into a 'melting pot' it was one from the beginning.

fundamentalist christianity is like soviet communism: it can only exist in a vacuum. while people are free to choose, many will not choose a dogmatic lifestyle. so as long as there is a choice, the fundie or the soviet cannot maintain a stable community.
therefore, fundies must eliminate all other forms of thought, or eventually, social evolution will naturally select them for extinction.
