many people i know who jog/ cross country at school are really ripped and muscular but don't lift weights.

It's all a matter of muscle to fat ratio. Runners are very lean. This means that even if they have very little muscle, it will be defined and therefore seem larger than it really is.

I am sure it builds some. Definitely better than sitting around doing nothing. I have seen runners with big calves and thighs.

well not really biceps or triceps (no upper body). the only muscle u will increase is ur legs. (thighs, calfs etc...)
