What started wahabism? How did it spread? Why has it not been silenced, or shut down? It clearly seems that it cannot be part of Islam.

Wahabis are not real Muslims. Raza Academy, Mumbai, India has published best literatures to expose thier wrongdoings against Islam. Wahabism got stronghold by the help of Lawrace of Arabiain the beginning of 20 th century. Pure goondaism, muscle flexing & hooliganism was utilised to put monarchy in Saudi Arabia. King Late Shah Husain's grandfather was 'mutawalli' of Kaaba when corrupt Wahabis invaded with British help & divided Khilafat (Usman Empire) running from Aden to Istambul as one unit in eight uneven parts resulting current Arab conflicts as its after effect. Israel coud be made only b coz of that on Palestinian land by driving them out of their own homeland by force to settle all outsiders, having no match in history modern . India too is planning similar tricks on Muslim Kashmiris with scores of MOSSAD commandoes, 6000 killed so far in last 16 years. I too have photographed many Mossad commandos who proudly told me that they are those ones. they agree that Kashmir will become graveyard of Indian over a million troops , if current strategy will not be changed drastically & Kashmir dispute is not solved speedily.
In India & Pakistan both most of Muslims are Barelvi Muslims (about 85 %) as told by BBC. Barelvis are pure Sunni Muslims i.e., those who follow Sunnah strictly by 100 % amount. Deobandis are followers of Wahabis. Talibans were Wahabis. They're in minority. They follow biased & distorted versions of Islam like Shias , Bohras, Khojas & Ismailis who are not real Muslims.
Wahabism cae in the beginning of 20 th century in Saudi Arabia. Before them there was no problem for 1300 years. Wahabis started destroying graveyards , tombs & many religious monuments under hooligan leadership of Abdullah Najdi purely by muscle flexing & British Govt.( habitual unreliable, unjust, dishonest, cheater & betrayer in entire history of mankind)open help & by proxy. King Abdullah, the father of Shah Faisal did secret pacts with British to hand over the land of Palestine to Jews, without having support of the Muslims of the whole world. His family imposed monarchy in Saudi Arabia. 5000 princes are controlling the funds, decisions of govt & everything. If anybody says anything against monarchy there or talks of caliphate(khilafat) or election or people's govt or democracy , he is sure to be eliminated. Khilafat is the model of Islamic Govt. controlled by purely people's choice as directed by Quraan & instructions of Prophet Muhammed(pbuh) which ran till Hazrat Ali's time. The princes bring western wives who never live there but when come for even half day visit, heavy & costly sealed gift packets in very large numbers go with them having all govs sectrets , plans too out. In islam a muslim man can marry a christian or jewish girl too , if they're pure to their faiths & principles in practice. But those wives are far from being so. Ibne Saud even changed the name of the country from Arab to Saudi Arabia on his personal name in 20 th century without having people's approval by cosensus as per islamic Law. These things are by products of Wahabism in brief.
Abdul Wahhaab Najdi was Hanbali but most of Muslims in the world are Hanfis.

It hasn't been silenced or shut down because it is the truth and the fundamentals of Islam. Imam Wahab did not bring anything new into the religion instead he attempted to halt that which was going astray and bring the Muslims back to the real Islam. The crap spread by the media using this term 'wahabism' is untrue and just another tool used against Muslims to try to defame us. As many posters above said the term wahabism is not an Islamic word and was coined by the west to create another word for their people to fear.

A really scary thing is proven by many Muslim posters on this question....they have fallen prey to the lies spread by the media using the term wahabism.

There is no such word as Wahabism this was made up by the British as a way to give Muslims another bad name..
Wahab, tried to teach the basics of Islam that were forgotten. He followed the Quran and Sunna of Prophet Mohammad(saw). He is scholar which is more then I can say for the person answering this question.

And yes Jenn is correct!! The shia hate him, because the shia are so weak in their knowledge of Islam..

They keep on with Muhammad ibn Abd-Al-Wahhab... extra imamism and putting unnecessary human beings between human beings and their God to allow leeway and twist Islam to in good structure their administration, violence and political agendas and manage Muslims into doing their dirty artwork. definite, they call to following the Quran and sunnah, yet their interpretations of them are one element and what they truly say is an total different.

Who let the dogs out?

What you call "wahabism" is actually the true Islam, and that's why it hasn't been silenced or shut down no matter how hard strive you, your friend Iblis l.a., and the rest of your kind. It is the will of Allah s.w.t. to preserve His religion, and there will be always people who will order good and forbid evil until the Judgement day.

Who are you to say what is Islam and what is not without evidence? Bring out your evidence if you are truthful. What is clear to you? Obviously nothing is clear to you, but it is clear that you are on Baatil.

I dont call myself a salafi,,but love the salafu-saliheen and follow them.
May Allaah have mercy on our scholars both present and past.
The only reason why I dont call myself as such is I dont think I can reach their level of iman and 7ilm.
just plain ol' muslim

Wahabism those who are labeled as such do not use this term to label themselves. It is used as a way of belittlement. The British coined the term Wahabism--not the Muslims themselves. This was a way to divide and conquer.

"Muhammad ibn 'Abd al-Wahhab was a mujaddid--one who guides the people back to Islam after they have deviated from it."

"So he calls them to return to the beliefs of the Prophet(Pbuh) and companions, and warns them against innovations. From this, we understand the mistake of those who claim that a mujaddid is one who innovates a new philosophy and understanding of Islam.
Excerpt from An Expalanation of Muhammad ibn 'Abdul Wahhab's Four Principles of Shirk by Abu Ammar Yasir Qadhi

The Prophet(Pbuh) said,

"Indeed, Allah the Exalted sends, after every one hundred years, someone who renovates(yujaddid) for them their religion."

Reported by Abu Dawud;(see al-Sahihah,#599)

"Before the Prophet(Pbuh), shirk was rampant all over the world, including the land of Arabia, where the Prophet(Pbuh) himself was sent. By the Will of Allah, the Prophet(Pbuh) and early Muslims were able to eliminate shirk in all forms from the entire peninsula of Arabia, and eventually many surrounding areas as well. However, with the passage of time, innovations crept into the Muslim nation, and these innovations eventually led to acts of shirk. So it was, that hardly a thousand years after the Prophet's(Pbuh), open acts of shirk were being committed in the very peninsula where the Prophet(Pbuh) preached.

Strangely though, these acts were not being commited by people alien to Islam, or by idol-worshippers who professed enmity to Allah and his messenger. Rather, they were being commited by people who claimed to be Muslims, and even worse, were trying to justify their shirk from the Quran and sunnah.People were openly calling out to graves and saints, asking such 'holy' people to grant them their desires, and to save them from their distress. Large monuments were built over the graves of such saints, and people travelled long distances to worship at these sites. In other areas, blessings were sought from trees and rocks, and people would seek help from other than Allah. To add to all this, sorcery and fortune-telling were rampant amongst the masses, and both of these acts are manifestions of shirk.
Such was the situation in which Allah sent a reviver, a mujaddid, who called the people once again to the pristine Islam and the pure monotheism that the Prophet(Pbuh) came with. He warned them of the blatant shirk that they were doing, and exhorted them in return to the Quran and sunnah to understand their religion. This man was Muhammad ibn 'Abd al-Wahhab.

Excerpt from An Explanation of Muhammad ibn 'Abdul Wahhab's Four Principles of Shirk by Abu Ammaar Yasir Qadhi

The be more precise those that practice pure Islamic monotheism is Salafiyyah(Salafism) refers to the following of Prophet Muhammad(Pbuh), his Companions and the two generations that followed him, known as the Taabi'een (the followers of the Companions), and the Atbaa' ut Taabi'een(the followers of the followers of the Companions). A proof of the virtue of these three generations is found in the authentic saying of the Prophet(Pbuh), "The best of mankind is my generation, then those who follow them, then those who follow them."(Related by Al-Bukhaaree(no. 2652)

The term Salafee applies to a Muslim who follows their way in matters pertaining to religion.

There is a lot of misinformation put out by the press. It is better to read some of his works and see for yourself, instead of allowing the press fill your mind with misinformation so that you will not be able to have an objective viewpoint.

Muhammad ibn abd Wahhab was a reformer not an innovator.

There is no such thing called wahhabism.. this is a derogatory (belittlement) title given by ppl who are envy and probably has low imaan.. so this is how they try to mock strong and firm ppl in their faith

it is funny that Abdul Wahhab is a boogeyman for some muslims like the sufi sect :) AW has died but they still try to mention this name and tag other ppl with this instead of reading the Quran and realize the true path of Islam
