Generally Plasma is considered the 'best' because:

- high contrast ratio
- better black levels
- Visible from a wide angle

But Plasma tends to be MORE expensive (because it is a huge sheet of optically clear glass), it needs a $200 bracket to hang it on the wall and professional installation is recommended. Sizes above 50 inches are available, but the price grows quickly for each inch.

LCD panel TV's tends to be PLASTIC panels and while the slower sets may have problems with fast objects, these tend to be the cheapest and lots of companies make them.

DLP and LCD rear projector tend to cost in the middle. They are not 'flat' but 18 inches is common. They are also fairly light weight (80 - 130 lbs). These use a light bulb ($150-$200) which last about 3 years, but return the unit back to show-room brightness. (The other types slowly fade over time and your only solution is to buy a new TV after a few years).

Rating these from 'best' to worst is hard because they all look fantastic. But I would have to say:

1 Plasma
2 DLP and LCD Rear Projection
3 LCD Flat Panel

Home Theater magazine has a recent review on some LCD flat panels that seem to solve the refresh problems so that might put these models in position 2.

Note: This is just my opinion. I could take any of the 3 types, put it properly in my room, calibrate the display and they would all look great.

Plasma has more detail so looks better. No lamp to change as this technology emits its own light.

LCD is fine if the screen is smaller than 32 inches or if you want to save money on the cost of the set and the power that it will use. Might have to change the lamp if it is left on long hours or after a few years of use.

DLP is good for a larger screen at a low cost. DLP technology itself may last longer but you have to change the lamp in it more than the other set with a lamp.

lcd for bright rooms

plasma best for hi speed sports supposedly (although I can't see it.) Plasma screens reflect mirror images in bright rooms.

Plasma cheaper usually.

Sony only makes LCD, maybe they know somthing.

I have a 42 inch LCD. Love it.

I am partial to LCD, NO lamps to replace and they produce beautiful crisp picture you want to keep your eye out for response times though some slower sets are bad for fast movement. Plasma eventually wear out and they are pretty expensive, DLPs do have a lamp and they are NOT cheap to replace.
