I think I get what you are trying to say...
I am NOT the spirit that keeps me alive. The soul inside my body, under this meat sack is the spirit or soul. My soul is much older than this body. The soul has lived many times before. It doesn't thrive for stuff...like this body does. Since this body has desires, it changes me as a person. It keep me from being as smart as my soul inside is... I still have to 'move' forward mentally and 'become'. The soul gives you flashes of who you are to be, but it doesn't interfere...

before life was formed! in our mothers belly, OUR spirits existed and had desire and reason.
and you can keep the body alive without the spirit. the jews have a word through translation called Animation. the spirit animates the body like electricity moves a toy robot.
