There are many ways. Meditation and religion are not really connected, although many religious traditions meditate (buddhist monks for example, or Sufi Islam).

The simplest form is to sit on a pillow in a quiet room (or lie flat) and just count your breaths, from 1 up to 10. Once you get to 10, you start again at 1.. Focus on just that, and nothing else. It sounds easy, but you'll find it incredibly hard and it requires a lot of practice. Your thoughts easily drift away from the counting.

Try it! I do it before i go to sleep and I (nearly) always sleep well.

I only went to the gym once to try meditation. It was early one evening... and it was only once! The "good thing" was that I felt really refreshed and rested up when I woke up from the relaxing experience. The "bad thing" was when I got arrested by the police after activating the burglar alarm when I got up and headed toward the locked storefront doors. You see...The session ended at 7:00 PM. and the gym closed at 8:00PM. unfortunately the time was 11:45 PM. The gym was closed and the staff had locked up and gone home. leaving me sound asleep on the mat.

You need to get your own mantra...meditating should be done in a quiet place with no interuptions and it gets you in touch with your inner feelings and gives you a feeling of peace and well being. In the meantime, you can just use "ohm" pronounouced OME. rhymes with "home." Repeat it over and over to yourself in your mind, not aloud, and after a short time you will be meditating.

Nothing bad comes from meditation.

How you meditate depends upon who you are and what you believe. People in many different religions meditate and there are plenty who meditate who have no religion. So it depends who you are and what you believe that determines how you meditate.

Meditate on all things good and pure and true.

Focus on Jesus and how you can be His hands and feet--helping people.
When you get truly Q-U-I-E-T, God can talk to you in the MOST AUDIBLE voice.

Can't see how anything bad could come from it, unless you lost track of time and missed an appointment.
