The name creeped me out when we first visited there. But it is so very lovely and unspoiled a site - white sand and blue water - I wanted to learn more about it.

It has to do with all the hurricanes and storms off the Outer Banks. Ships have been going down there for centuries; their cargo washing up on the sand days afterward. Back in Colonial times rum was a very popular - everyone drank it - and it was called "Kill Devil." The rum was stored in big wooden barrels (not glass bottles in those days) and loaded into the ship's hold. The story I read was that after one shipwreck in a storm, dozens of these rum-barrels washed high up into these dunes half-a-mile inland, and the local people were able to climb among them and find barrels of "kill devil" free for the taking for weeks afterward. Hence, the area began to be known by the name "Kill Devil Hills."

You've received a few light-heartened responses, all in good fun, I hope. A few tips: ask the priest of your local church, who should be able to direct you. Also, Yahoo!'s city guides should list churches of many denominations--check it out. And even if there isn't one in the city itself, there should be other towns nearby. Please have a safe trip as you go there, assuming you're traveling; if not, best wishes to you.

Have you checked the "Mass Times" web site? It's quite handy -- I use it whenever I'm going to be traveling over a weekend.

It's OK - the flight was successful, and no-one was hurt.
