My mom lost her poodle about a year and 7 months ago.
Our family is used to having small dogs like yorkies and toy poodles and my moms poodle died at 16 years old she treated that dog so good she wouldn't trade that little dog "Sadie" for the world and she was so devastated the morning when Sadie passed quietly in her sleep!
She didn't talk to anyone for over 9 months and now she is back to herself and now my sister and I have been putting deposits on at a toy black and white tuxedo puppy and my sister asked would she reject another puppy and she said she would love one but she doesn't know where to get a wonderful toy poodle!
We have a plan to put the puppy under the tree during Christmas eve night and we need a good imitation
Santa Clause note!
But all other ideas are welcome! thanks!

Their was a girl on here a couple of days ago with a great idea! Instead of giving her the puppy give her a picture and see how she responds and ask if she wants it.

The puppy can not stay under the tree all night. It WILL whine and need to go out in the middle of the night. I also recommend you ask a neighbor to help you by keeping the puppy overnight, then maybe early in the morning before your mom gets up, you can go over to the neighbors and pick up the puppy. Then, put the puppy under the tree and have your sister bring your mom down. She'll be surprised Christmas morning instead of in the middle of the night with a puppy needing to use the bathroom.

Alyssa's idea is very cute, but you'd need to be extremely careful handling a puppy in a box. The puppy could decide to jump out as you're walking, so be sure you're holding both the top and bottom securely if you decide to do that.

This is a really nice thing for you and your sister to do for your mom. I'm sure, even if you just hand her the puppy as soon as you get it, she'll be very surprised.

First of all, dont buy a puppy from a pet store. Thats the number 1. You dont want to give your mother a sick puppy, because puppies from pet stores come from puppy mills, where the parent dogs are treatly inhumanly and in horrible conditions. The female dogs there are just pumping out litter after litter of puppies. Almost all of the puppies in pet stores are sick, and as cute as they might be, please dont buy one there. Instead, go to a humane society and adopt a puppy, and surprise your mom with a healthy, bouncing puppy. You can also try petfinder.com, look into rescue groups, or more pounds/shelters. What I'd personally do is when I've adopted the puppy, make him/her all cute looking, with little ribbons, etc. Maybe the volunteers can help dress up the puppy your adopting, and you can take him home. Now, to hide him, (cause I doubt they will let you keep the puppy untill christmas) if you have a really good friend or relative, you can keep the puppy there, maybe for about a day, and then on christmas morning, have somebody get up early, get the puppy, and put him/her under the christmas tree. You may even want to put him/her in a box, all wrapped up, but puppys are curious, so it might get freaked out and start going nuts. Also if you do the box idea, make sure you dont keep the puppy in there for long, and make sure you have air holes. Also, buy toys, food, etc. for your new puppy. Please, remember, to adopt a homeless animal in need at a shelter. "Dont buy while shelter dogs die" Good luck!

Make sure you buy all the stuff that your mom will need for the puppy too otherwise she'll have to dig out Sadie's old things which might be upsetting for her, or maybe she'll be so thrilled at having a new pup that it'll be ok. Cut out little dog paw footprints and stick them round the house at christmas too. By the by you can't keep a puppy in a box under the christmas tree all night he'll need love and attention straight away, I may have misunderstood you :D

I gave my older sister a kitten one year, because her and her bf split up and he took the cat they had when he left. I left her upstairs in my bedroom while we opened gifts, and then as the gift pile got smaller, I was "Oh no, I think I missed one!" and ran upstairs. I had pre-wrapped a box in 2 pieces, so the bottom was wrapped and the top was wrapped and you could just pop the top on and off, and I put a cushion inside with the kitten on it and took it downstairs and handed it directly to her. Everyone was really confused and interested and they all leaned forward while she opened it and "pop"! Out jumped the kitten. :-) It was really fun, everyone was shocked, and she was happy.

If you write the note, you should say something sweet like "Sadie is watching over you from Heaven, and for Christmas she made a special wish that I would bring you a friend to love and cherish."

I am not sure you will be able to keep the puppy quite under the tree all night. I would get a friend or neighbour to keep the puppy over night and then get them to pop it on the door step in the morning. Get them to knock on the door and get your Mum to answer it, then you can still leave a note for santa with the dog.
Hope your Mum gets many years of love and enjoyment from the puppy.

I know exactly how you feel, my brother and I went through the same thing with our mum, after her 12 year old dog passed on.. It was nearly two years later and she was saying that she didn't want another dog, as nothing would ever replace her last one..

So my brother, knowing the preference of dog she liked, arranged to get one for Christmas... he turned up with this lovely little puppy in his arms and said to my mum.. I know you said you could never replace your last dog, but this is a new dog, and with that a new beginning. We know how happy your last dog made you and that is what we want to give you for Christmas.

Long story short, Mum has now had the dog for 3 years, and she thanks us for helping her to take the next step.. She is so happy to have her new dog and the joy it brings her..

It sounds like your sister has sounded out whether she would accept another puppy, with a good response..

Good luck, I hope your mum and her new puppy have a great time getting to know each other..

SANTA BROUGHT YOU A GIFT THIS YEAR! and she will see it! that is how i would do it! good luck! make sure you ask your mom. have you recovered from sadies death? are you ready to get another dog?

NOPE: put a note & a pic under the tree... that way there can be a backout possible. SHe may want a poodle the same color or not the same color as the last dog. Also since the Tuxedo markings are not permited in the AKC show ring (they are in UKC) this may be someting she's nto willing to have (depends on her kenowlage & preferences).

How about on Christmas morning, when everyone is opening gifts, sneak out to where the dog is hidden. Put the dog in a crate and put that on the front door with a bow on it's neck. Ring the doorbell and go where no one can see you, but you can see them. When they answer the doorbell sneak back into the house.
