Australia as a place is just terrific. Great place to live. One of the best places on earth to explore. Even one life time is not enough to explore complete Australia. Endless Australian outback, Great Barrier Reef, Victorian beaches and great ocean road are some of my favorites.
What I loved most about Australia is its sporting culture and laid back life style. Its cities are one of the best in the world. One of the safest place on earth. In any sports in the world you will find Australians at the top. Even in the sports which are not played in Australia like Baseball.
But all this if you are a Caucasian. If you're not, Australians are very racist. But then who is not. Australia still in the stage where USA or UK was 50 years back. Aboriginals are still treated as second class citizens. Until recently Australia had white Australia policy and didn't even include aboriginals in census. In other words didn't even consider them as human beings. Now they are facing shortage in work force they are welcoming Asians and other non-whites.
I had to face racism everyday and was abused a lot. Once I was nearly beaten. They wouldn't think twice using words like black. Smaller towns like Ballarat and Geelong are even more redneck.
Recently one foreign born doctor was detained under terrorism laws and when government failed to prove anything they had to release. But John Howard bluntly decline to apologies. He was an Asian. Can you imaging same for any Btit or American.
I was kind of prepared for all this but when same things happen with my professional life I decided to leave Australia as it’s certainly not one of the best places to make a career. I found North American a better alternative. I can go back to my country anytime. I would be a king there but I really for sorry for Aboriginals. Where they would go? Even their Trans Tasmanian cousin is far better in treating its indigenous people.
But a place where you can find great beer, beaches and babes.
Cheers

australia is awesome. it is a beautiful country and australians are, mostly, great people because it is important to them (you) to be 'a good bloke (or blokess)' and that makes the difference. you can stop someone in the street and ask a question and they will help you. when you buy a coke from a shop the person working is genarally friendly and cheerful and will wish you a good day, people are polite and there is very little street crime or people just out to cause trouble. these things seem so basic and when you are there you start to take it for granted but here (UK) these things almost never happen. people here are afraid of each other, miserable, looking out for number 1.
on the other hand you guys dont appreciate what you have in terms of your country and lifestyle. i think australia also has an inferiority complex with regard to its position in the world and your question probably shows that. to be a european born in australia is absolutely a gift.
the ugly side of australian life is the inherant racism towards the aboriginal population, but i understand that the problems there are not as simple as race relations in other countries so it is easier to just say 'they're all a waste of space.'
but in general i love australia, aussies and i cant wait to come back and, i hope, live there for ever and ever!

My wife and I are travelling to Australia in February. This will be our fifth trip there since "discovering" the country in 1999. We have seen many wonderful places such as the Great Barrier Reef, Uluru and The Great Ocean Road to name just a few, but the best things in Australia are not shown on the tv travel progs'. Every where you go you see something you never expected to see. It maybe in the countryside with its wonderful wildlife or the small towns with the great pubs or even in the cities, in Australia everything becomes a treasured memory. Every Australian I have ever met has been friendly and helpful.
If you were to ask me what is the best part of Australia, then the answer is simple - Australia.
Can't wait till February

Actually, from what I can see, most people know nothing much about us!
We've got a very nice lifestyle here in Australia, especially compared to the majority of the world's countries where poverty and lack of political and personal freedom are realities of everyday life.
Compared with countries in Europe, we have a lot of positives, and some negatives, but the same could be said for them in reverse.
Overall, I think there is a reason we get in the top 10 of lists such as 'Best place to live', 'Best place to holiday' and 'Happiness indicator of the world's countries' every year.
Sadly, we do rest on our laurels and take a LOT for granted, especially when you consider how many Australians travel around the world ~ perhaps with eyes open for bargains and closed to the problems they see.
Cheers :-)

Australia was fantastic and very diverse with bush, rain-forest and reef. I think it's a fabulous country with good living conditions and a future for the younger generation. I went to Australia on holiday and saw Victoria, Northern territory, New South Wales and Queensland. My favourite having to be Queensland! Just loved the scenery and climate!
As for the Australians I met. Thought they were vibrant, positive people that are very proud of their country. And i can see why. They seem to have a more laid back attitude and lifestyle to us Brits and seem to chill and enjoy life more.
For those reasons I would love to emigrate "Down Under"!

Maxth, where did you get the idea that the British are far superior in every aspect, including sport??? If you're all that great, why do thousands of you emigrate down here each year???
OK, you beat us a couple of times at rugby. Maybe if you lot now learned how to bat, bowl and swim, you'd have the makings of a great sporting nation.

I love Australia the land of sweeping plains the unique animals that live in my back yard such as the kangaroo and wombats that dig huge holes(OK they are cute but that's it) the beaches are beautiful and clear. We have it pretty good in Australia and we don't walk around with our heads up our ass.

I don't really give a rats what the rest of the world thinks about us.
All I know is that, I and all my fellow Aussies are blessed to have been born in this fantastic country.

I go overseas working/holidays at least twice a year. No matter where I go; for how long; how much I enjoy myself, I'm always busting a gut to get back home.
But I live in WA - God's country - so that's understandable, I suppose!
