If the laws of thermodynamics hold true energy cannot be created or destroyed. I think then that when we die the energy (mainly potential energy) in our bodies is conserved. It changes form, either quickly (as during cremation) or slowly, but it is conserved. It exists somewhere, somehow. So the energy that once was you still exists. Also if anyone thinks about you and remembers you after death you are then part of that persons energy. The survival of your conciousness such as it is now seems unlikely though not impossible.

That which defines us often does not even survive until death. Our unique personality is defined by the mind, which seems to be an ephemeral and fragile piece of wetware associated with the physical brain, and can not survive damage and deterioration of that organ, let alone its destruction!

These answers come from the Bible for you to consider, not necessarily to believe in as I do not know if you believe what it says. " Man's fate is like that of the animals, the same fate awaits them both. As one dies, so dies the other. All have the same breath. All go to the same place, all come from dust, and to dust all return." " For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing." Also remember no one has ever come back to tell us if anything is after death.

Our body dies, our spirit lives on. When we sleep, our spirit often leaves our body, enters the spiritual realm, and returns before we wake. Dreams seem really real sometimes, because they are, but in the spiritual realm. When we die, our spirit again goes into the spiritual realm, and will again want to return to a body. This time to a fresh body. Life is full of cycles. Reincarnation of the continuous type, keeps us in the reality of this universe. It respects the struggle of life, and its positive affect on human potential. It also puts the focus on addressing the problems of this world.

Death is the cessation of bodily life processes, so "we" don't survive death.
The soul, I believe, does persist (survive) after death.

Your question provides no depth, clearly once you are dead, survival is impossible.

The clue is in the word... although our energy remains (and I'm talking spiritually as well as scientifically). However, our awareness does not. =oD
