If you have the space and money to care for a number of cats then by all means have 8 or more...if you cannot afford to get them spayed/neutered, vet care when needed, feed them all then maybe don't get anymore.

Well at the moment I have 13 and am not actively looking for more ( actually I never do - they somehow find me)
My rule is that anyone offering kittens we say no, anything found in a ditch or whatever comes in and we see what we can do. I have close connections with a local rescue center and a very understanding vet. They are all neutered and vaccinated.
I would say that 8 is a good place to stop really.

That's way too many, no matter how much space you have. Would you be able to care for 8 toddlers at once and really keep them clean, fed, and happy? I only have one and I'm outnumbered. You sound like a classic hoarder, and that's not good for you or them. Read the link below, and if this describes you, get help and find other homes for at least 6 of them.

I don't think it matters how many pets you have as long as you are able to keep up with them. Check your local zoning laws first because you don't want to have to give them up for something like that. Then just make sure they have ample space to frolic and that you can afford to feed them and take them to the vet. And keep their living quarters clean. The problem arises when the number gets too big for you to handle and this number is different for everybody.

I have two cats and I think it's enough, especially because of the expenses. It'd be great to have more, but it's really not realistic for me. They're not declawed and go to the vet to get their claws trimmed regularly and they eat expensive food.

We have a rule in our house, only one pet per hand. We have 4 hands and 4 cats.

Never! Cats are the most unique and beautiful animals. If you have the time, capacity, and love for more, by all means, get more!
