my daughter is almost 14 years old and was very thin up until this past summer. She just starting high school and im worried that might have added to the fact of her weight gain. She always asks me for my opinion of how her jeans look and when i see a little muffin top hanging over and say she looks great she gets mad at me. i want to know if i should bring up her losing weight. she gained alot of weight this school year and went from 5'5 and 92 pounds to 5'5 and 112 pounds.

Your daughter is perfect the way she is.
It makes me sad that you can't see that.
Please buy her a bigger pair of pants.

Do you want her to lose WEIGHT or lose FAT? Because there is a big difference. At her age, she doesn't need to lose weight. If she has extra fat hanging over her jeans then help her pick the right size. Jeans these days are made to almost girdle a woman's waist and many young girls end up having "fat" hanging over because the market assumes our waists are flat like a man's.

Perhaps you could join a gym with her. Do some crunches, something to work her waistline. There is never anything wrong with toning muscles and getting in shape. But losing weight is often subjective because people mistake needing to get rid of fat as needing to drop numerical pounds.

Is your daughter mentally disabled in some way??? If not, I assure you that she does NOT need to be told. She knows.

And way to go with the parenting skills there. No 14 year old should be losing weight. A 14 year old is still growing and developing. Ask her doctor for verification of this. All you can do by expressing concern about her weight is to give her anorexia. Leave it alone!

I wouldn't say anything to her, if she's 5'5" and 112 pounds that's about the average wieght for a 14 year old, if she loses any she might become unhealthy.

112 lbs for 5'5 is still very healthy. That is actually towards the skinnier end for someone 5'5. DO NOT bring up losing weight, she is perfect the way she is.

Do you realize what happens to girls when they reach about 14? Their bodies go through puberty, she'll begin to grow breasts, wider hips and most likely put on a few pounds. This is so her body is able to have a child (of course she isn't going to just yet)

112lb is hardly fat or in need of losing weight.

Just encourage her to participate in regular exercise and avoid fatty and sugary food whenever possible.

Tell her she's enormous! When she almost dies from an eating disorder and is left without a functioning brain or digestive system, at least she'll be skinny!

i agree with lisa a. you shouldn't tell her to lose weight at 14. i was fat at 14 and my mom made me starve to lose it, and I became anorexic and depressed, and I later became bulimic. No, do not tell her she is fat. That is not what a mom should be doing!

...You're going to make her UNDERWEIGHT.
She may have just grown more curvy over the summer and needs better pairs of jeans.

Anyone over 5' SHOULD AT LEAST be over 100 lbs.
